Are Carter & McGrady going to the Hall?

Post#1 » by FlightNo.23 » Fri Feb 29, 2008 2:02 am

Well looking at Basketball Reference's Hall of Fame model, Carter has a 94% probability on making it and McGrady has 86%. So what are your thoughts? These guys have had great, great individual regular seasons and Carter has had some playoff success, but do you think that is hall of fame worthy?

No. And this is coming from an obvious T-mac fan...

Not even close right now. I think Tmac is more likely though because his team is at least good and could go far, and he puts in more effort than Carter.

If McGrady gets a ring he's getting in. Hell, if he could have some playoff success for a few years in a row he's getting in. The only possible argument people have against him is playoff success.

IMO if Carter can put up 20/5/5 for another 2 years it'd be hard to keep him out. He was the face of the NBA in his earlier years... he wasn't just a talented player.

*edit* To put things in perspective, McGrady is 28. He still has alot of time in this league.

Players can not have playoff success and get in the hall of fame... so yes.

Since when do you have to win a championship to get into HOF?

Vince Carter has had about the same playoff success as Dominique Wilkins... I say he gets in....

McGrady, imo will get in as long as he wins a playoff series, which will probably be next year or so...

I think VC could get in, but it won't kill me if he gets snubbed.

With T-Mac I am very wary. Never surviving a 1st round, even with guys like Yao or Battier around you, that is really sad for a potential HOFer. I think he will join guys like Adrian Dantley or Mark Jackson, who were good but did not make it.

BTW, both are worse than Artis Gilmore, Dennis Rodman or Dennis Johnson.

they are both the type of people that the HOF likes; flashy, athletic scorers with relatively clear reps (though both did have the quitting on a team thing, neither are associated with violence/drugs/gambling). I would guess both are marginal candidates and it would depend on how strong a class of competitors they face in a given year. (same for DJ, Gilmore faces serious ABA haters, Rodman created his own problems)

I don't think that's entirely accurate...

Carter actually has a better chance than Mac at the moment, better career scoring numbers, and have been at least to the second round..

But if their careers ended right now, i'd have to say no.. But both still have a lot of basketball left in them, so anything can happen..

depends on the next few years..

rings would lock both guys in the HOF..same with Paul Pierce..

without the ring, they are both borderline..if McGrady retires early to play baseball, then he won't make it..but if he continues playing for a while longer, and keeps putting up the same numbers, he'll probably make it..

Carter should make it if he continues putting up good numbers for the next few years, and a playoff appearance, preferably past the first round..the fact that he took a below average supporting cast to the 2nd round and was one shot away from the conference finals helps his cause..he's had some playoff success as a #1..
