Bryant is smiling again and the Lakers are contenders

Friday, February 29, 2008
GEOFFREY C. ARNOLD
The Oregonian Staff

Kobe Bryant's scowl of last summer has been replaced by a smile befitting an early spring.

Rarely has a team's -- or a star player's -- outlook changed as much after the start of the season as it has for Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers.

When the Lakers played their first game Nov. 2, Bryant was brooding because he was still in Los Angeles and the team hadn't acquired another star to help him win. Almost four months later, as the Lakers make their first Portland appearance of the season, the star guard has many reasons to grin.

Beat L.A.? Won’t be easy from now on

Tonight in the Rose Garden, you’ll see a preview of what’s possibly going to be the Next Big Thing in the NBA, as soon as Greg Oden gets into the lineup.

Over the next several seasons, you can forget about Boston, Detroit, Dallas, Phoenix and Houston – the Portland Trail Blazers vs. the Los Angeles Lakers is what it’s going to be all about.

No return date yet for Bynum

The center is beginning a second week of jogging in a therapeutic pool in his recovery from a dislocated kneecap. He probably won't play until late March or early April.

By Mike Bresnahan, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
February 29, 2008

Andrew Bynum began his second week of jogging in a therapeutic pool, although there still wasn't a specific target date for his return.

He hasn't started jogging on a treadmill, the next step in his rehabilitation, making a late March or early April return date more likely.

The Lakers, however, were not concerned with Bynum's overall progress.

Go Lakers !!!

Is Roy playing? If so, then Portlands chances increase considerably.

I'm not sure what to make of this match up just yet. Portland has historically given us problems, so it'll be interesting to see how we respond. This is one of those games that we pretty much need to win if we expect to come out of the West. We have 2 more games after this against the Blazers, so this game will be a good indicator of how we will finish the season. If we can handle the Blazers (winning 3 of 4), we are on our way to coming out of the West.

The Oregonian reported that Roy probably won't play tonight.

I have a bad feeling about this one, mostly because of bad history in Rose Garden, but I'll patiently and quietly hope for an extension of the you know what...

The Lakers know that even without Roy in the line-up, there is no room for slacking, considering the way the Blazers played on Tuesday.

Go Lakers!

Lakers by 13... only 26 minutes for Pau last night and only a 2 1/2 hour flight. It's gonna be fun to go to a game and talk **** to these punk Blazer fans too... It's been a couple years since the Lakers put a good beatdown on them in Portland.

I feel riped for a loss. I really do.

I think we've developed some bad habits and it'll take a loss to make us regroup.

I hope I am wrong though.

This will be a VERY VERY TOUGH game to pull. They want revenge.. on top of that they are playing AT Porkland. Lakers feel very comfortable at 10-game winning streak and they might relax a little.

I see us winning... but BARELY. Final score---- LA 92, POR 91.. Quadruple Overtime.
