Why do so many NBA players have tattoos?

Post#1 » by carlos1223 » Fri Feb 29, 2008 9:32 am

I was just wondering, with so many players in the league that are practically covered with tattoos, what is the main motive for this phenomenon ?
Is it some kind of attempt to "intimidate the enemy", or just a point of fashion ?

That is just an ignorant statement. Where is the cut off for being considered "stupid"? Is it just one or two? How about three or four? What if it is just one piece that covers a large part of your body?

Tattoos have become more socially acceptable these days. You can find them everywhere, from the businessman on Wall St., to a biker down south, to basketball players.

As far as basketball is concerned, I think part of the reason we notice them more is because a lot of the players body is exposed. Tattoos are really commone among football players as well, but we don't see as much of them.

Well seeing as how I have some tatoos I can tell you that it can get very addictive, as crazy as that sounds. The only reason I dont get more (its been a few years since my last one) is because of the money. I imagine if I had cash like NBA players that I would get more and more and would end up looking like them. In the end I dont mind at all since there are plenty of players who dont have any.

It's part of the culture. How difficult is that to understand?

I think a lot of people who get tattooed end up agreeing years later. A decade or two or three or four down the line they say, "That was not smart."

Tattoos are cool now but they won't always be... Some decisions should be made wisely, especially the irreversible ones.

I agree to some degree. There are a lot of people who get them because of their popularity. These people tend to get something that does not have a significant meaning in their life. I have also seen people who do put a lot of thought into it and just get one on a whim.

They absolutely can be a mistake however, if you put a lot of time and thought into each one I think there is a good chance that you will not regret them.

1-2 tattoos is ok... after that though, your IQ drops with each tattoo. Tested and confirmed on MythBusters

It's all because of Iverson. The same with the corn rows and the arm sleeves. They want to be him..

It's not just the NBA, it's everywhere. Why do kids get tatoos when the have the risk of hep and once their youthful bodies turn into adult bodies, the tatoos don't even look the same? I really don't get the infatuation with it...but it is some people's choice.

Why do they smoke when it's proven to increase the likelihood of cancer, emphysema, etc?

People have the right to make whatever choices they select, but it does scare the heck out of me as a parent...my kids will come home one day with a pack of cigs rolled in their sleeve and some Hawaiian tatoo on their arm, and I'll go into Fred Sanford mode.

i never wanted to insult you.but look, why do you think guys like nash or dncan doesn't have (many) tatoos?imo they are clearly smarter than iverson/marbury/mat barnes...of course it's not always the case, so i'm not saying that you are stupid but in Nba the guys with lower iq have more tatoos...that's my opinin.
