DX projects Bucks with OJ Mayo (your thoughts?)

Post#1 » by paulpressey25 » Sat Mar 1, 2008 1:15 am

The current Draft Express rankings show the Bucks taking OJ Mayo with their mock draft....

http://www.draftexpress.com/

What does everyone think on this? I personally think the guy will go in the 4-9 range by the time we hit June draft day.

I don't think he's ideal given the issues, but might he be BPA if we remain in the 8th slot?

I've only seen highlights so I can't really judge, but I don't like what I've heard said about him. That he's a self proclaimed star who wants to take all the shots, and talk about himself in the third person.

I want us to change the culture in Milwaukee by drafting heady two-way players. I don't even want to consider a guy unless he projects to be a decent defender at whatever position he plays, and seems to have a positive attitude about team play.

Instead of drafting somebody with the same ethnic makeup as Bogut for him to be friends with, let's draft him a running mate who plays a team game, including on the defensive end.

I don't watch college ball, so I don't know who that is, but from what I've heard Mayo's the opposite.

DX's scouting report is interesting. I did like this part:

The silver lining from this season has to do with Mayo

I like the player, but I hate the person.

A few websites compare him to Billups. I like the fact he's a big, big guard. Tall and strong (unlike say Sean Livingston who is really tall but a toothpick)

I'm going into this offseason not happy with either Mo or Redd, so I could care less what our backcourt looks like. I want the BPA.....

I don't like the turnovers nor the entourage which has some similarities with Marbury......

But I just have this feeling we end up with the 7th pick and the mocks will have him maybe landing in our range.....and this thread will be the first of many come three months from now.

I think he projects to SG in the NBA and not PG as many thought would be the case. The thing that concerns me about him is I'm not sure his Basketball IQ is all that strong - and this team badly needs to get smarter on the court. He has talent without question but when I watch him there's just this gnawing feeling I have that something's just not quite right. I think some of it may stem from the perception I have that he thinks he's better than he really is. And the Bucks don't need to add more of that to their roster either.
Nothing will not break me.

He's definitely a shooting guard. He's also got that rare killer instinct where he just wants to absolutely KILL the opposing defender. I love his game, but the attitude is a red flag. I didn't like him coming into the draft but I now like him quite a bit. He's certainly got the ability to become an elite shooting guard in the NBA if he screws his head on straight and works hard.

Ugh...

If we get him I think Redd/Mo at LEAST 1 probably both would have to go.

Hope that happens anyway...but I am not a Mayo guy, TO prone......alot of those sites just slot players where they think they should be picked.....would not mind seeing the Bucks trade down while acquiring a qualty player to go with that lower pick if this is the case.

OJ Mayo is a ballhog with a bad attitude. Not what we need. And he's not that good. He averages a lot of numbers because he is allowed to take any shot he wants. Seriously, I've watched USC games where he pulls up from 30 feet to take contested three pointers. It's ridiculous that he has that kind of ego and he's only in college. I do not want any part of this kid.

I want no part in O.J. Mayo.

I pray we get a higher pick and are able to land a guy like Eric Gordan.

Mayo is not a ballhog. I don't blame anybody for thinking that, but when you watch him play, USC is just a disaster offensively, and Mayo is not the reason for it. I used to be dead set against him, but at this point I think he could be an all-star but he's in the wrong environment to really show it. His defense is outstanding at either guard spot. I'd feel pretty fortunate to get him in the 2nd half of the lotto if we indeed end up drafting there, but trades would have to follow. He could very well be a top 3 talent in this draft, though.

I met him when he was in 10th grade practicing on an AAU team in Cincy. He was the star of their AAU team and was a hot dog. He was labeled at age 14 as the next lebron. Did it go to his head? obviously, when you're a teenager and everybody around you says you're going to be the next lebron, after a while you think they are all telling the truth, and you bcome a selfish ball hog hot dog and start telling the coach what to do. A telling sign of his character is the amount of high schools he played for. I'm not sure if he ever graduated from high school or had time to take an ACT test, but USC thought he was good enough for college anyway.

as a 10th grader, he smiled a lot. he took a lot of 45 foot shots and crazy dunks. the crazy part is that he made most of them.

There's a kid in Illinois who is said to be the second best junior in the nation. he played at Waukegon this year. he was just kicked off their team. it was his third team and school in 3 years he's been kicked off of. he has a problem with rules and authority figures. He'll transfer to another school and play for another high school coach next year, and some team like USC or one coached by huggins will give him a college scholarship and he'll put up great numbers. I don't think I'd want him on my team though.

And that's the big problem. Somebody, somewhere should stand up to these students and teach them . but because they have athletic skills, there is always some coach who needs to keep his job who is willing to bow down to the athlete and allow him to be a star.

we have children today in 6th grade reading Dr Seuss books and taking accelerated reading quizzes on them so they can get an easy 100 and they are not even being identified with having a reading deficiency.

We need more people like Epicuris.

Chase Budinger would probably be a better pick.

Ewwwwwwww, O.J Mayo's a meanie, so let's not draft him.

All these guys have egos and think they're God's gift to basketball. Some just don't mind showing it. I would have no problem getting Mayo.

Occasionally, people mature between the ages of 14 and 20.

I read your post above and completely agree, he's a delight to watch. I absolutely love his game and I don't think there is a ceiling on what he can accomplish. I actually love his "attitude" and the cocky swagger he brings. It's what superstars have, you need to believe you are the best to be the best and lead a team. He's only 18, I would love to get this guy.
