All things About Gil's Return (edited thread title)

Post#1 » by Teddy KGB » Sun Mar 2, 2008 9:40 am

Hey guys,

I have Gilbert Arenas in the PC Board draft thing and I was just wondering if you could help me make some decisions.

Firstly, this is my team:

Y Ming/E Dampier
R Wallace/C Wilcox
R Jefferson/B Diaw
B Bowen/B Gordon/S Vujacic
G Arenas/J Tinsley/M Conley

Is Arenas a good enough distributor to start at PG for me, or should i move him to SG, bench Bowen and start Tinsley?

Is Gilbert effective in a half court set? Is he better when slashing or shooting?

Should the ball be in Arenas' hands more or Yao's?

I know Gil is not the best defender, is the rest of my team good enough defensively to cover up for him?

Also, if it's not too much bother could you guys plz tell me which PGs Gil does well against and which PGs he struggles against.

Thanks in advance!

Dude, you posted at 4:40 a.m.

Arenas would be fine on that squad. Rasheed Wallace is an ideal PF for a team with Arenas. He'll spread the floor and play good D. On a team like that, you don't really need a pure PG anyway. It's not like there will be a ton of ball-movement, slashing and kicking. Basically, you'll run Yao in the low post or you'll run pick-and-pops with either Yao or Rasheed at the high post.

Besides, with Ben Gordon as a backup PG, you don't want Arenas to come off the bench. Those two guys won't be that good together because they have the same style of game.

He sometimes has trouble guarding really quick guys like T.J. Ford and Tony Parker.

The only guard who seems to defend him well is Jason Kidd.

According to sources in the organization, the Wizards are going to clear Gilbert Arenas to return to practice any day now, which is probably the best news coming out of the organization in weeks.

However, according to another source, Arenas is nervous about returning and, according to that same source, Arenas is not in the biggest rush to get back.

Selfishly, I want Arenas back on the court. But it's probably in his best interests not to. Sure, I'd be spooked coming back to the court after two surgeries on the same knee. He risks another reinjury and possible chronic problems.

From a fiscal standpoint, it makes more sense to stay away as well. If he comes back, it will, hopefully, be in limited time, and he's just not going to be the same old Gil for a while. Ernie's going to use that against him in contract negotiations. Of course, going the other way, if Ernie hasn't seen Arenas be healthy on the court since November, he is really supposed to fork over close to $100mill?

The hope here is that Arenas practices for a few weeks and feels comfortable enough, physically AND mentally, to return in April. But I won't be shocked if he doesn't.

btw, are we able to sign any more guys to 10-day contracts w/out going over the luxury tax?

Update from Ivan Carter:

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/wizardsinsider/

" The team confirmed that Arenas has been cleared to practice but said no date has been set for his return to game action. Arenas said he will practice at full speed for the first time tomorrow.

"I've been cleared to practice and play," said Arenas. "Right now, it's just getting in shape. It's more mental. I'm actually scared to play right now. I think that's where we're at right now so I'm looking at it game by game. I think I'm scared to go out there right now. I just need to go through these practices and get my rhythm back. I'm still going to try and take it slow."

Still, Arenas said he is reluctant to push himself too quickly.

"I don't want to get hurt again," Arenas said. "Two injuries back-to-back kind of messes with a guy mentally. I took a long time, I rehabbed very well and I don't want another setback. Mentally, I don't want to go through that again. I'm just going to take it slow, work out with the team and just build up the confidence mentally.""

Gil running (or not)

Post#14 » by nateteaches » Mon Mar 3, 2008 11:05 pm

Gil has been cleared to play but is "scared" to test out his knee. How long before we see him? What does this say about our med staff? **just announced on CSN

I hope he can practice with the team for a couple of weeks, and then come off the bench for a few games. If he plays 10-15 minutes a game as sharpshooter off the bench, it should help him ease into action with confidence.

Haha, Gil coming off the bench. We have the deepest team in the league. :D

I hope the "being scared to play" doesn't really mean that he's afraid he won't be the old Gil, anymore. His words are definitely not comforting - there are a little too many mental machinations for someone who relies on supreme self-confidence.

That's understandable. He pushed himself to quickly last time. He shouldn't risk getting reinjured for no reason.

The team is doing pretty well. Rest up Gil.
