My friend and I were having an argument about this. Who was more valuable and was "the guy" on those mid 90s sonics teams (Like around 1996)

Shawn Kemp or Gary Payton.

This is like asking who is the key guy on the Suns, Nash or Stoudemire. It's not even close, it's Nash, and GP is the clear answer.

Well, I pushed it up to 5 . . . . even tougher question, who was the main man on Seattle's championship team in the 70s . . . Sikma, Dennis Johnson, or Gus Williams. Gus Williams was the one who got the most press then, DJ has the best chance for the HOF, but I'd say Sikma was the indispensable one.

Payton.

I really like to know why (half of the) people voted Kemp...

Same reason why people say that Melo is a top 10 player or that Kobe has been the undisputed best player in the league the past 4 years. Same reason some people think Arenas is better than Billups.

GP. He was great defensively and did well feeding his teammates the ball.

I think it's clear that it was Payton, who keyed the offense and assisted Kemp and everyone else... and was their lead defender.

Kemp was very good and very important but he was no Malone and definitely wasn't the main guy. More like Pippen to Payton's Jordan, if you will.
