Does anyone know of any instances of teams throwing offers at guys just to make another team spend more?
Actually the reverse is true. Most teams don't give competitive offers because they know their current team will just match it. And if they offer too much to try to beat out their current team (i.e. giving Landry the MLE) it becomes a huge risk.
That's why most players who get big paydays are usually unrestricted free agents.
edit: I believe we have a team option on Novak next year because we ended up using part of the MLE on him.

Right, I knew about that, and that somehow the money they offered is tied up until the player accepts an offer or rejects theirs (not aware of the specifics though). That's why I was curious if anyone had heard of that happening - not for an example of a good strategy, but for an example of a dumb one

Get Yao Healthy
Figure a way to draft anyone of these guys ( Hasheem Thabeet or Serge Ibaka) we will have to move up to get one.
Resign Landry
Sign a free agent Shooter(Gordon Giricek)
Dont resign novak, trade hayes for somthing maybe draft postion for the 2 kids I discussed above!!!

Wait, so its the Rox option to pick him up after this season correct? And after the end of next season, teams can go after him, but we can match any offer right? I think Landry is safe here, theres no way the Rockets are letting him go, we will match any offer that any team has to offer. But I doubt there is a team out there that is stupid enough to offer him the full MLE, for a player that has just gotten out of his rookie contract...
Oh wait, sorry I forgot this league had a team called the Knicks, who take players with big contracts and offer players big contracts, and ruin there respect level around the league...yeah so just hope Isiah Thomas is fired by then

he's probably referring to the draft rights to Sergei Lishouk we got from Memphis for Badiane's rights in the Bonzi deal
Ah I see.
Well, now that we're supposed to be signing Justin Williams I say we see how this plays out. If Williams can contribute for us, then we may have found our backup C. It'd be great if Williams pans out because then our roster would be set, and we could focus on moving BJax's expiring for another scorer.
