The Average Southwest Team is...
...10 games above .500.
Yes, even including the Grizzlies. The division is 174-124, or 50 up divided by 5 teams. That's not too far under .600 (.585), on pace for an average team record of 48-34.
I know this is nothing new, but I think it bears repeating at times. Houston has won 15 straight, and is one loss away from being 4th in the division.
Unbelievable.

Absolutely. In fact it was the realization about the Spurs streak that prompted this thread, or at least prompted my looking into the records which lead to this thread.
The division is astonishing. It contains a team with the 3rd worst record in basketball and still has an average record of about the same as Denver's.
As it currently stands, the team with the second worst record in the division will win 52-53 games.

What?
NW: 133-167 (.443)
SE: 124-172 (.418)
Divisions go:
Southwest: +50 (.585)
Pacific: +34 (.557)
Atlantic: +2 (.503)
Central -4 (.493)
Northwest -34 (.443)
Southeast -48 (.418)
As a whole, the West is +50 over the East (exact same +/- as SW itself overall.)
If you want the closest current matchup to reflect the E vs. W disparity, it would be Philly (the closest to an average Eastern team) vs. Toronto (the closest to an average Western team.)

its almost unfair to dallas, houston and new orleans and san antonio. the fact that they have to play each other so many times.
it'll be a race down to the last week as to who wins the division, between maybe all four if houston keeps it up. amazing.
but i also wish some of those teams were younger to add to the competitiveness for years to come.
there's a great chance one of those 4 teams will represent the west in the finals.

The NW division just has the misfortune of having 2 teams that are in rebuilding mode. Where would Boston be if Seattle and Minny don't give up their best players to them?
The 2nd and 3rd place teams in the NW don't make the POs in the WC, but if they were in the EC they would have the 4th and 7th best records.
I also wouldn't call the EC's 62 and 57 record against the NW overwhelming.

Every west team has pretty much the same schedule. A team plays every team in its division 4 times. Every West team plays every other West team 3 or 4 times. So the "playing each other so many times" is bunk. Take Phoenix for example. They play Houston, SA, and NO 4 times and Dallas and Memphis 3 times. Not a big difference from any SW team.
