OT: TJ Ford and locker room issues.. and so it starts..

Post#1 » by Raptors90102 » Thu Mar 6, 2008 4:35 pm

Hey guys.. Apparently there's tension building up in the raptors locker room and TJ Ford seems to be the main reason.. Here's a link to today's article:

http://www.thestar.com/Sports/NBA/article/309937

Apparently TJ hasn't been enjoying the backup role and has been playing a rather selfish game for a few games now. The selfishness reached its peak when TJ decided to go one on five against the Orlando magic during a stretch of 7 minutes in the fourth quarter and attempted bad shots, turned the ball over 7 times and threw the game away. What started out as a 3 point defecit for the raps at the start of the 4th had ballooned into a 13 pt lead for the magic with under 6 mins remaining in the game and resulted in a raptors loss. During that stretch ford NEVER passed the ball to anyone and took 11 straight shots (some of which were extremely ill-advised) and kept turning the ball over.. and then had some on bench gestures towards his teammates and a rather annoying grin on his face..

What was his behavior like in Milawaukee.. I know he didnt get along with Redd, but was he known as a rather selfish player who wanted to be the man? I want to know what is it about this guy that he is hated wherever he goes and eventually causes issues..

He had stretches where he'd take a few bad shots and turn the ball over, but I don't remember anything like that. Sounds pretty crazy.

I actually saw that game...

One of the most selfish displays I have ever seen in the NBA. The person I was watching the game with just continued saying "What the hell does he think he is doing?"

TJ must've been going through his brothers sock drawer before the game...

The problem in Milwaukee was that everyone wanted to be the man, Redd, Bogut and Ford.. and nobody was really bending. He did have stretches where he would try to take everything on his shoulders but not as bad as what you are describing from what I can recall.. but I am sure this thread will definitely garner a ton of examples of such behavior.

Honestly, Ford could be frustrating at times where it was obvious that he had the skill but was trying to do too much.. I always trumped that up to his immaturity and was hoping that he would grow out of stuff like that.

TJ has always had an EGO, that we always know.

This is funny to hear IMO because last I heard (read) was that TJ had no problem with a backup role and he was quoted as stating such. He was happy to sacrifice for the good of the team.

He has taken a few verbal jabs towards our current backcourt and calling them selfish when he was here (Blake said similar things) but now it sounds like TJ is the one who is playing selfishly.

TJ was never the brightest bulb of the bunch. He probably forgot that he was okay with the backup role and now hates it. The funny thing is, playing on on one and selifshly won't get you a starting job. Playing your hardest and playing well will get it. Silly TJ.

It seems Calderon's production has decreased quite a bit since Ford's return....for any Rapts fans, is that the case? If thats the case, sounds like one will have to go in the offseason......

I'm very curious to see what happens with the Calderon/Ford situation going forward. Both guys have been extremely productive when on the court, and with Ford's injury risk and Calderon's incredible play you know that the Raps would rather keep Calderon if they had to keep one. So you assume they'll re-sign JC and just hope Ford can deal with being a backup since that's a pretty awesome combo to have.

The problem is if Ford becomes unhappy, are any teams going to be willing to take the risk on him? I think GAD mentioned the Raps got insurance on his contract...if it's transferrable then someone might be willing to roll the dice. Not sure how that would work though.

That's not really what I said, and the way you say it there makes it sound like something special.
What I said was that the Raptors didn't have any problem getting the standard insurance for TJ Ford's contract. Any time any team signs a player to a contract, they get the contract insured. That's standard operating procedure.

There is no issue of transferability. The insurance is attached to the contract, not to the team. Otherwise there would be issues any time trades are made.

Hopefully that clears things up.

I was at a game at Mecca back in the day where Michael Ray Richardson played high as a kite.

Anyways....back to the discussion......

Before he came back from his injury didn't TJ go out of his way to comment that Calderon was playing really well and that he was fine with the backup role. That didn't last long.

For a guy who is one bad fall away from severe health issues, you'd think he'd embrace the game and play it the way it should be. Good riddance.

TJ doesn't suffer fools and bad situations (for TJ) easily. Milwaukee was a bad situation, and TJ rebelled. Played the way he wanted to. Forced a trade.

I thought he might grow up in Toronto, and be glad to be part of a pretty smart franchise. Guess not. Likely it isn't meeting his needs, however he defines them.

Would he settle down on a strong contender? Maybe, but he's building a rap sheet that suggests no.
