Josh Childress scouting report

Post#1 » by LL Cool Scott » Thu Mar 6, 2008 8:02 pm

Not as good as Scouts, Inc. - but a decent overview.

His game can be compared somewhat to that of Shawn Marion's, which is fair, considering they're the same height, they're both athletic enough to guard multiple positions, and oddly enough seem to have hired the same 85 year old man to teach them how to shoot. I give a slight edge to Marion,

LOL i stopped reading right there.

Marion is strong and fast. Childress is weak and slow.

Marion averages 8 defensive rebounds per game, Childress 2.8.

The Suns gave up 5.7 ppg fewer when Marion was playing. The Hawks give up 5.6 ppg more when Childress is playing.

J. Chill is a bit overrated in my opinion. I agree with tontoz, he's too slow to guard anyone and can't shoot. His game is very limited. I also think the fact Woodson played him so much at PG hurt his game. The kid never developed the way he should have. I'm sure J. Smith loves him though. He got many assists with those crazy air ball he bricks.
GO HAWKS.

Chillz game is definetely limited, he's a role player but people hold him to a greater standard because of where he was drafted. He is VERY good at his role. We have so few players that play specific roles for us, it's nice to have a guy like him around.

Clearly, Hawks fan Tontoz is a better judge of talent than an unbiased scouting service. Clearly.

Marion averaged 17/10 in his second season. Childress is averaging 12/5 in his 4th season.

Marion is well known as being one of the best defenders in the game.

Saying Marion is "slightly" better than Childress is like saying Paul is slightly better than AJ.

Was that written by a scout? I'd like to see something off of ESPN Insider.

If "probasketball-fans.com" says it's true, you know it's the truth. I don't agree with tontoz on a lot of things, but I thought most everyone knew that Childress was a below average defender. To compare him to Shawn Marion is hilarious. Marion does pretty much everything better. Except maybe layups. On top of that, Chill may be the one player in the NBA with an uglier release than Marion.

I doubt that is a scout. Childress seems to be the only scouting report on that site. Which is weird. Probably LL Cool Scott made a site real quick. :D

I give a slight edge to Marion, whose chest-flick jumpshot is slightly more honed. But at the age of 24, there is even a chance that Childress sits down for a few consecutive summers to rebuild his shot entirely. Simply raising his release on the ball head would allow Childress' height to work more in his favor, keeping him in the league long after his currently springy legs run out of bounce.

That is the whole sentence.

He said they have basically the same jump shot but he gave a slight edge to Marion on it.

Maybe you should have kept reading because it comes off as very lame of you to pretend he was talking about as a player overall instead of their odd jumpshots.

Then here is something for you to read.

JJ shoots 4.5% worse when Childress is on the floor.
Smith shoots 3.1% worse when Childress is on the floor.
Marvin shoots 2.6% worse when Childress is on the floor.
AJ shot 2.9% worse when Childress was on the floor.
Lue shot 3.6% worse when Childress was on the floor.

http://82games.com/0708/0708ATLP.HTM

People make a big deal about Childress' shooting percentage but they don't realize that he hurts other players games. He can't create for himself or others and he kills spacing.

His offensive limitations along with his pathetic defense is the reason he has the worst total +/- on the roster.

http://www.nba.com/statistics/lenovo/le ... team=Hawks

Marvin is close behind but when you consider than Marvin has played 400 more minutes than Childress that makes Childress the clear winner.

Yeah, those stats aren't pointless at all.

You are blaming a player they don't run plays for and only gets hustle points and gets out on the break for other players not shooting well.

That was a post of someone that doesn't watch games, when I know you do. Although you do have a tendacy to see what you want to, especially when its a player you don't particularly care for.

The reason they don't run plays for him is that he can't shoot unless he has a Wal-Mart's worth of room in front of him.

It isn't like he can come off a screen to shoot a jumper. He can't post up unless he has a pg on him. he can't beat guys off the dribble.

The reason the other players shoot worse when he is playing is that he hurts the spacing. He isn't a perimeter threat at all and so he hangs around underneath the basket. That makes it easier on the defense and makes it tougher for us to get open shots.

His "hustle points" should be called "wimping out on defense" points.

Chill *can* beat people off the dribble. He has done it many times this season.

If they are running out on him then he can. But if they are set in front of him he can't do anything.

He couldn't even beat Diop off the dribble.

I mentioned this in another thread, I've noticed from watching games that Smith has way more airballs when Chil is in the game and we are playing a lot of half court sets. Someone asked me to show them a stat on it but airballs are just counted as misses so there is no stat for it but I think that showing everybody shoots worse with him on the floor is a good enough indicator.

I still like Chil, I like his contributions and hope we can lock him up for the MLE. I think a better coach and a more complete bench would make his contributions more valuable.
