Hoopsworld: Can The Magic Get A Little Respect ? *Good Read*

Post#1 » by Hotshot Hower » Fri Mar 7, 2008 1:43 am

The Orlando Magic are enjoying their finest season in several years. They are closing in on the team's first 50-win season in over 12 years. They will also win their first division championship in the post Shaq era. The Magic finally have a good basketball team, but not many people outside of Orlando know how good these guys really are.

They have improved in several important areas of the game, such as scoring 104.3 points per game, sixth-best in the league - which is an improvement of 9.5 points from last season. The turnovers are down to 14.0 per game; not a great number, but 2.3 less than last season. They're averaging 42.2 rebounds per game, an increase of 1.5 per game - great considering the loss of Tony Battie.

They have made good strides, but all of them take a back seat to the Celtics' re-birth, the Cavaliers' new additions and the Pistons' continued excellence. Even Dwight Howard's performance in the dunk contest

we arent getting respect from all the writers and reporters because they say our pg spot is very weak and inconsistant, which will hurt us in the playoffs..but we should be getting some credit now

I prefer we don't get any. That way we remain under the radar and not have pressure when we head into the postseason.

what do you think it means to me?
Dwight Howard on his FT struggles:

"I just think everybody needs to stop talking about it," Howard said. "There's more to life than free throws."

i thought the same question...
but i have been catching myself looking at our record to just brighten up my day. I don't get why it doesn't get us some more respect, specially over toronto. I don't mind though.

I'm with you Pancho. Success is so much sweeter when no one expects you to do anything. And if, God forbid, the team doesn't do well, you don't spend the following season trying to get that monkey off your back ala the Dallas Mavericks.

Remember the Mavericks who got that a$$ spanked by GS in the 1st round.

I think im fine with not getting respect. We know our team is good despite what any outsider says. The team has flaws but its a good team. If they dont want to recognize it then fine, doesnt bother me much.

I thought the following quote from the article was interesting:

It's time to make sure everyone knows that the Magic's 22-12 record on the road is fifth-best in the league (third-best in the conference). It's time that people start talking more about the Magic's 7-2 record since the All-Star break and less about a non-existent rift between Howard and Stan Van Gundy.

That says it all. The media, ESPN being the prime example will focus on controversy, and will try to create or stir one when there is none, because it sells, it grabs attention. Remember all the ESPN shows (First Take etc) making a big deal of Stan calling out Dwight? Because ESPN chooses to focus on things like that, and the Magic have been overlooked for so long that yea the Magic are not gonna get respect right now. Even Dwight gets no respect.
