Because he plays with passion, heart, and aggression. He always tries. You never see him slack off or say its over, which he never gives up. You can't get a better player than Pietrus. He only needs to work on his shooting and free throws, but he got the basic stuff down as he hit a couple of good jump shots from mid range against the magics tonight.

Let's be fair about this whole debate.
I think it is beyond question that Pietrus has the athletic tools to be a very good rotation player in this league. I thought he'd be a Bowen-like defender with a better offensive game after watching him his rookie year.
Then, a couple of years ago, someone fed him the line that in order to get paid, he had to be an integral part of the offense. That is, to use someone else's analogy, like pitcher's being proud of their .220 batting average instead of their 3.46 era.
If Pietrus would go back to being the defensive / rebounding minded player who would score, occasionally, on jump shots from the corner, fast breaks, or slashes to the rim, he'd be way more valuable than he is now.
And I'd pay to have THAT Pietrus on this team. Not as much as Monta or Andris, but maybe 5 years, $22 million or something like that.
As it is, Pietrus has shown no long term commitment to playing to his strengths of athleticism, defense, and rebounding. He still wants to be a scorer.
That's a shame for him and for his checkbook.

I hate on Pietrus because its fun, but he's not that bad... frustrating is a great word for him. Its not just that he wants to be a scorer, he wants to be a showman. And until Pietrus plays within himself and loses that dream of being an all-star, he'll continue to frustrate by trying to do too much.
