Would you sign Duhon ahead of resigning House?

Post#1 » by campybatman » Tue Mar 11, 2008 2:59 pm

That is to say, Chris Duhon proclaims that his time in Chicago will inevitably conclude at season's end. He'll be an unrestricted free agent this summer. Entering this summer, I think Duhon is a viable option at back up point guard if Ainge elects not to resign both House or Cassell. I feel like Duhon wants to play and know that he's a part of what that team is doing. He could've a place in Boston and Ainge could add youth in the process to build on toward the future to complement Rondo. I reckon it'll come down to deciding on whether or not you resign House, Cassell and Tony Allen. Let's not forget about Tony. Because I believe if Tony is resigned then House becomes expendable and I prefer a younger option in Duhon over an aging Cassell for point guard depth. I know Cassell wouldn't mind retiring a Celtic. However, Ainge must decide if House, Cassell, [Tony] Allen and Pruitt have a future with Boston long term. Well, House might not be expendable in the opinions of others. I like what he brings to the table this season. Still, if Duhon's price tag is reasonable. I see no reason not to consider him this summer as a possible upgrade over House at point guard. Duhon's one of those free agents who could be a steal if signed for the right price. He's twenty-five, can defend and is probably more of a traditional point guard than House give or take his [Duhon] own flaws. Based on these reports, Duhon just seems frustrated and desires to be in a better situation. So, I don't think him getting fined is a red flag which entirely defines his character. It might. But, I'm sure that Ainge will ask around from those in the know about him as a player and person on and off the court.

Duhon, who is in the final year of his contract, didn't speak with the media Monday but said during an interview on WMVP-AM (1000) that he realizes he's not in the team's plans beyond this season. ''I probably won't be back,'' he said. ''I don't know what the summer has for me. I don't know what's going to happen with Jim. John has a lot of decisions to make. He's made some mistakes, but for the most part, he's done a great job trying to make this team competitive.'' Chicago Sun-Times

Kevin Bradbury, Duhon's Chicago-based agent, confirmed his client's frustration over his role. "Chris respects John and the organization," Bradbury said while recruiting clients in Lithuania. "But the team has sent him some mixed messages. He's accountable for his actions, and he'll be professional." Chicago Tribune

Paxson vowed to take a critical look at all aspects of the organization this summer, but cleaning house won't be easy. The Bulls can't trade restricted free agents Ben Gordon and Luol Deng without their consent; Kirk Hinrich, Larry Hughes and Andres Nocioni have large contracts that will be difficult to deal; and younger players such as Thomas and Noah haven't yet reached their potential. Arlington Heights Daily Herald

Team sources said Paxson remains more upset by Thomas' absence because it was premeditated to the point he told two teammates "See you Thursday" on the Tuesday night before missing Wednesday's workout. Another source said Paxson followed the collective-bargaining agreement's handbook and fined Duhon the standard $2,500 for Sunday's absence. It's unclear what action Paxson took Monday, but it's expected Duhon will be benched a second straight game Tuesday. Paxson did say Bulls management didn't know Duhon had left Detroit to attend the Duke game until seeing him on television. "Was it the best choice? No," Paxson acknowledged. "But it's been addressed. And there are consequences for it. I think Chris gets it." Chicago Tribune

When approached by the Sun-Times before the game for a reaction to the punishment, Duhon said: ''Usually, I don't play anyway, so it doesn't have that much of an effect on me.'' Neither Paxson nor Boylan was pleased with that sentiment. ''That's a bothersome statement,'' Paxson said. ''Chris and I talked about it, and he said he said it out of frustration. ''I said this to the guys: The bottom line is we all have a great job. We're in professional sports; we are compensated extremely well; we are asked to come to work and give all you have. You have to put it in that perspective.'' Chicago Sun-Times

I like House for his role as a designated shooter for 10-15 minutes a game. The question is do the C's get rid of Cassell next year and get Duhon to back up Rondo. Maybe Pruitt will be ready. Who knows?

Yeah, I don't want to think about next year yet. However, I like House for what he's brought to the team so far and I wouldn't mind bringing him back in that role again.

Yeah, I can understand that feeling of House. I like him and Posey this season. They both are dual sixth men. However, it's either going to be bye to House or Tony Allen. Perhaps, Cassell retires if the Celtics can win a championship this season. Then that just leaves a decision to be made on Pruitt. I just feel as if Duhon can be a bargain right now if Ainge acts promptly this summer. I mean his value can't be that high unless you go on potential. I don't think Duhon has reached his ceiling yet because his role in Chicago has been inconsistent seemingly his entire time as a Bull. Obviously, Pruitt's the wild card. Do you let go of him in favor of a more experienced player with more polish on his game than Pruitt right now. Tough choice...

I believe Duhon encompasses everything this team would need in a long term backup PG. Guys like Cassell may be nice for that one year run, but it's rare to find a long term solution at this slot, which is what Duhon could be.

Duhon is more of a traditional PG who can slow up the tempo when needed. Makes few mistakes, has a nice 3 point shot, and can be counted on to score if necessary as well. Another key part is that you won't feel uncomfortable by any means starting the guy in case Rondo went down. I think Duhon is more valuable than Eddie House or Cassell long term.

Its not like we can't also keep Sam I Am. Lets see how House does in the playoffs first though.

Who needs a long term backup pg? Especially when we have a long term solution to starting pg in Rondo and another young pg prospect in Pruitt. There's no such things as long term solutions to backup positions, unless it is a 6th man of the year type backup.

Duhon will probably cost around 2.5-3 million a year. I don't think Ainge will want to spend that much money for a backup pg when he can get a Sam Cassell, Anthony Johnson, Tyronn Lue and maybe Eddie House for the minimum.

I would readily take a capable back up point guard that's too capable of starting in place of your entrenched starter. For example, Toronto having Ford and Calderon. I mean who would desire to have a two or three-headed point guard rotation with no clear starter among them. I think of a team like Seattle with Watson and Ridnour or Minnesota with Telfair and Foye or Portland with Blake, Jack and Rodriguez. There's nothing better than having a team that has players that know their roles and can accept them. You've harmony and establish chemistry. And I don't believe that when you've two young players at the same position that they'll butt heads. Not if their roles are clearly defined and accepted. Duhon if he were to become a Celtic wouldn't have done enough in his time in the league to suggest he deserves to start ahead of Rondo without disrupting the balance you've in place with Rondo as the starter. Still, he has shown he's a quality player that can fill a role. That's all you want from him is to fill a role and keep each position on the roster competitive. Competition is a good thing as long as it's just that and isn't a tool which divides you and everyone else.

This season Duhon is making $3.2M. Is that too much for a reserve guard when Scalabrine is making $3M this season and will make $3.2M next season and $3.4M in his last year? I mean $3M for any player that's the last man or second to last man at the end of the bench isn't worth it. Yet, a quality back up at one of the two most important positions on your roster can't ask for that if that's indeed Duhon's asking price? Yeah, I guess it all depends on how much one could estimate Rondo's worth will be in a couple of years. Surely, it'll be more than $3M if that's Duhon's salary in Boston.

Of course I would take Duhon over House, but only as a backup PG. If Sam will be re-signed next season, I would actually go with House again. But if we won't get Sam back, I would sign Duhon and search for a bigger 3rd string SG.

House has been a very valuable part of the Celtics success this season. If it came down to House at $1.5 mill for 1 year versus Duhon at an average of $3.0 mill for 3 years, I would take House every time.

The Celtics don't have a lot of money to play with, one Scalabrine type player is enough. The Celtics don't need to lock up Duhon for 3-4 years which is what he will probably get on the open market.

It's all about salary flexibility.

Go after Rob Swift with the MLE. At worst he's another Diop (sucked on his first team, became a solid defensive big on his second).

Trade Scalabrine and a draft pick to CHI for Duhon. Keep House. Let Cassell walk. Sign TA to a Perk-esque bargain deal for 3-4 years and hope he finally matures into a consistent player.

Hell no. I don't want any head cases on this team.

Duhon needs to STFU and play ball. He's getting paid millions and yet he acts like some street punk.

No! House is perfect for this team. We need his shooting.

Duhon isn`t good at anything really. I would much rather have Cassell and House than Duhon...

No, i wouldn't take him. He is the type of guy who KG used to get in fights with during practice in Minny. Duhon doesn't care at all about basketball. He skipped a team meeting last year during the playoffs. He is not the kid of guy we need.

Even without judging Duhon's recent behavior, which his GM seems to want to go out of the way to find an excuse for. Duhon is 25 years old and while not an All Star PG probably not a guy who is looking to be a back up his whole life. That may be all he is but there are guys much worse than him starting in this league so my guess he can land a starting job this offseason and make close to mid level money.

I would rather spend the money on Tony Allen and find a back up Center and give Pruitt a chance. Which is very likely what the organization is going to do.

What teams are going to give Duhon the MLE (or more)? Milwaukee's the only franchise I can think of.

Also, I hope we can somehow benefit from the Bulls' offseason "reshuffling"- Jerry Krause's original plan to lose his way to a championship wasn't a bad idea, the problem is figuring out which draft picks to hold onto. Elton Brand, Ron Artest, Brad Miller, Tyson Chandler and Lamarcus Aldridge have been sent out of town- I wouldn't mind getting Deng or Nocioni into the rotation.
