Byron Scott was no role player. He lead the team in scoring for the 87-88 season putting around 22 a game.
Eddie Jones was also not a role player, he was an All-Star with the Lakers.
Glen Rice was on the bubble but he was more more of a 3rd option than an outright "role player". He was a shooter though and not too much more.

the only thing that stopped Larry Legend was his own bad back.
Give the guy some credit please. Coop was great, Larry was a Legend.
With all due respect to Larry and I do hold him in high regard. Cooper was a legend in his own right on defense. He wasnt a "bird stopper" per se.. but he is up there on the all time defensive team.
Cheers.

Cooper was a legend in his own right and he did more to bother Larry than you give Larry's back credit for.
Cheers.

i appreciate what Cooper contributed to the Lakeshow, but come on, Phil, we're talking about Larry Bird, probably top 5 player ever.
no one takes a bit from Cooper, but players on Bird's level cant be covered single handedly.
Does it take anything from Coop? Absolutely not.
Cooper was a nice player overall, averaging 8-10 points and 5-6 assists in 25 minutes from the bench, with great defense, maybe the best ever in his position before MJ, but Coop is only 6"5 170, while Bird is 6"9 220.
Bird would just shoot over Coop if Coop had to guard him one-on-one, and no one was smarter then Larry.
I dont know if you remember, but Bird was 30-10-6-1.5-1.5 player in points/boards/assists/steals/blocks, career 50% shooter from the field, and 37% from three.

Yes, I know what Larry's resume looks like and I used to watch him and Coop go at it. That is taking nothing away from Larry at all. Great Players cant be stopped. However, if you ask Larry who was the best defensive player he ever played against it would be Coop. My point is that Larry is the first one to say this and wont use his "back" as any quailifer.
Of course we shouldnt go back and forth about how great Larry was.. we both know. My point is that Cooper was one of the best defenders in the game , enough so that Larry would often talk about his greatness.
Cheers.

Rambis
Scott
It was hard leaving Horry out of this, surely he was pivotal in several series, but he did cruise during the regular season, and he was sometimes a lazy player. He was clutch, no doubt.
I love those top three because they knew their roles. They embraced their roles. They excelled in their roles. They exemplify what role players should be.
Above all, they were professional and played hard every night. As a fan, watching them play was as reliable and comforting as hearing Chick's voice. They didn't let you down.
