It was easy to be a fan in the 80's. The 90's were a lot tougher to watch. I was spoiled growing up as a fan in the late 70's where all of the Philly teams had championship aspirations. The 90's taught me better what it means to be a loyal Philly fan.

Totally agree. The economy is pretty bad right now and ticket prices are very expensive.

My father was the reason I started watching the Sixers in 1979 when I was about 5 years old. He has been a fan since the early days of Wilt. He is disabled and hasn't attended a game since about 1985 but he almost never misses a Sixers game on TV.

The Sixers fan base has a ton of fans from the days of Wilt,Doc etc,, that are over 50 years old, follow the team every game but can't afford to attend the games.

But all the other people who just started on this message board or going to games are...

BTW how many games have you bought tickets to this year?

So you've been to 2 more than supposed the "band wagoners" that went to last nights game.

And just remember not everyone has the bankroll to afford to spend $50 a night on 3 nights on something (I'm assuming you bought your ticket to see all these games and someone didn't give it to you) they can see on TV for free. Maybe they can only afford one game, and why not make it the best team in the league?

Its not even about how many games you go to. Its about timing. I tend to think more of a fan who went to a game back say in Decmeber versus a fan who goes to a game as our team nears a .500 record. I have nothing againnst fans that cant afford to go to games, but I think we can all agree that most of the fans who were there last night just started reading the paper and saw espn and saw how well our team was doing and just decided to go to the game.

Same boat for me...family and a 2 hour drive limit my access to games now...thankfully, they have TV!! Still might sneak down to the Saturday game against Atlanta, but that's probably my only shot this season.

I'm willing to bet that game had been close to sold out for months. Just like the Cavs or Lakers or I'm sure the Nuggets game coming up is. Walkups don't make a very high percentage of people that go to games, it's a good amount, but nothing amazing. People generally don't decide to go to an NBA game on a whim, especially the good seats.

carlos:

My first year of being a "fan" of this team was 9-73...

Oldschool.

I have no problem with people not dropping the coin that you have to drop to go to see a game live until people think it is worth it to drop coin. Let's not forget that this is a fan base that - at a Game 7 Eastern Conference Semifinal game against the Bucks in the 80's when Doc was around when they had about 12,000 tops at the Spectrum.

REAL oldheads have told me that the teams with Wilt would regularly not come close to selling out at Convention Hall (the old Civic Center), which held probably 10 grand tops.

With all due respect, it sounds like a pretty judgemental call on your part, IMO...but welcome to the forum.

I think Harvey Pollack mentioned they used to play double headers too.

Four teams would play in the same building in one night. Like the 1st game at the Convention Hall would be the Sixers Vs. Knicks and the 2nd game would be Boston vs. Detroit.

The following night they would do the same thing but the Sixers would play Boston and the Knicks would play Detroit.

And ... the motivation for fans to follow the Sixers and attend games is what drives the owner(s) to improve the team. If fans attended games regardless of wins and losses, the owner(s) would have no reason to spend money trying to improve. They do it for one reason ... to improve attendance.

I'm actually the opposite of these "bandwagoners" -- my interest in the team has waned since we started winning. It's painful for me to watch us winning because each win is a step in the direction of mediocrity (imo).

I'm confused. I watch every game on TV, and I wasn't willing to go pay cash until I felt like the team was worth paying for.

I used to have season tickets downstairs....and had a 4 year stretch where I NEVER missed watching a game...and follow this team voraciously.

So if I had gone to the game last night after NOT going at all before...I would be a bandwagon jumper?

Among my friends it's pretty much a concensus that we follow and support...but only pay if it's really worth it. That having been said, we talk SIxers A LOT and are still huge fans
The JB-S System....Zero Defects.
