This is a really tough question, sometimes I want to say Smith just because of that crazy potential he has and how good he already is. Then again I see him making ALOT of bone headed plays that makes me wonder if he will ever get more BBIQ.

I look at it like this. If used correctly, Deng would be a second/third option on a good team. He would probably do most of his damage by getting open and hitting midrange shots. He would be a very good, but not elite perimeter defender and an above average rebounder for his position. That is all today (if he were healthy/not in a season slump).

Putting Smith in the same situation, he would be a second or third option who started most offensive sets in the high post. He would be getting the ball in motion for alley-oops or throw-downs instead of getting the ball in isolation behind the 3 point line (this has started to change with Bibby). He'd still be one of the best help defender in the league and he is easily the second best PnR defender at the PF spot (after Garnett) and an average rebounder. Again, that is all if he were in the right situation today.

Shopping Cart seems to lack a fundamental understanding of basketball. Smith's team defends 8.3 points per 100 possessions better when he is on the floor. A flawed metric in some regards but that means that out of rotation players, he has the biggest impact in the league in terms of defense (a lot of this is attributed to not having a backup big man that can play defense out all). Even with only decent offense, he is a big time contributor because of his defense. Put him on a team where he can post up with the floor spaced or start his offense inside the 3 point line or catch more lobs (again, this has started to happen with Bibby) and you have a player who really changes a game.

Tyrus Thomas is the best defender in the league then. Yes a flawed metric, so don't use it. I would love Josh Smith on my team, because entertainment is nice, but any winning basketball team would rather have Deng for a good reason. Put Josh Smith on a team where he can post up and that team's not winning because a Small Forward who isn't GREAT at posting up is apparently a post up option. Josh Smith is at best a decent fill in on the starting line up of a championship team, whereas Deng is a great role player in the starting line up of a championship. 'sall i'm sayin, calm down on the U R STUPID I H8 u ****, you're all trying to be the Josh Smith of message boarding. Seriously, put Josh Smith on a team where they space for him to post up and you're expecting a good team? HA. Let Deng hit his sweet midrange jumper every once in a while and call it a day if it's a good team (note: not the Bulls anymore partially because of the new Deng, don't put one bad year out of several quality years over the oppo), let a team space for the floor so Josh Smith can post up to a 9th seed year in and year out. Didn't NBA 2k8 teach any of you about player roles. (a period not a question mark, a joke not serious, there's no green in my blood)
