Jose Calderon free agent

Post#1 » by bobobolas1 » Wed Mar 12, 2008 9:34 am

http://www.marca.com/edicion/marca/balo ... 99761.html (in spanish, im sorry) (My spanish is not really good, english neither :))
Hey people, i dont know if he has said that because of he played last night @lakers or what but he said to spanish media that It would be very nice to play with lakers. Share team with pau. It is not something he is really going to do but he's already seen that chance. He says that he is happy in toronto but if they dont want him anymore, he will go and maybe they dont want him because of the money. He will be making about 7-8 mill or maybe some more. Are we able to sing him? do we need him or is enough with Fisher&Farmar?

In PG we have the weakest position....

thoughts?

Boobs I don't think we need him. I'd prefer a defensive minded small forward. Who happens to be a lunatic.

Raptors will match anything we can offer for him, that's for sure.

Calderon would be the perfect addition to this team, but unfortunately there is no way we're getting him IMO.

Would the management consider trading Farmar for Calderon? Interesting thought.

Having pau and kobe that are able to score 30ppt each and bynum down there, i think we dont really need a scorer at PG. Just a man that can give 12assist each night and he show he can. his D always can be better of course, but he is quick and tall to be a PG, he can jump.

He's a restricted FA and Colangelo has been making the standard "we'll match any offer" statements. A guy on the Raps board has broken down the salaries pretty well and the Raps could probably match anything up to 10million/year, but would obviously be much happier around the 7-8 million/year. Teams would obviously need some capspace to be able to push that envelope though. Looking at the Lakers salary info on Sham sports, you guys don't look like a major player for Calderon this summer.

With TJ Ford's injury history, a S&T for Calderon doesn't make much sense this summer, although it could be possible, but only if the return makes sense for the Raptors. Like a major upgrade on the wing. I don't think you guys really fit into that discussion.
9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

We don't need a pg. Fisher & Farmar do more than enough and Sasha has been in the triangle long enough to play some pg as well. We need a defensive minded player at add to this mix. Next year with a healthy Bynum and Ariza and a free agent signing of a player like Magloire or Grant Hill would be a better addition to the line up.

Fisher/Farmar/Sasha
Kobe/Ariza/Coby Karl
Odom/Hill/Luke
Pau/Turiaf/Vlad
Bynum/DJ/Mihm

or

Fisher/Farmar/Sasha
Kobe/Ariza/Coby Karl
Odom/Luke/Vlad
Pau/Turiaf/Vlad
Bynum/Magloire/Mihm

Both still give us the depth we love but both also would be better team wise on D end of the floor.

Can't see him coming here, but yeah Calderon's an excellent player.

Though if the Lakers were to commit to a new PG I'd prefer that it is someone who's tougher on D. Just look at the playoff teams in the west and the PGs that'll have to defend one another.

On the offensive side of the ball he'd be a perfect tri point. His defense is non-existant, but he'd be an unbelievable addition for you guys. But the Raptors don't want anything from you in a deal and they'll match any offer up to $10M IMO.

as a raptors fan, i would want bynum. but i think that is too much to give up from the lakers perspective. fisher does a good enough job for LA anyway. man, i still can't believe you guys got gasol for nothing.

I'd give them Luke, filler and a pick or two for a re-signed Calderon. They can't keep Ford out of the starting line-up in the long run and Calderon will be a very expensive and unhappy second option PG to have on the bench.

Luke could play a very important role of point forward in their spread out offense. It's not like they'd need Luke to score anyway, they already have plenty of fire power between Bosh, Ford, Parker etc.

Fish would still see minutes at both PG and SG.

If the Lakers add Calderon and give Bynum a big contract, that's a lot committed to the starting five. We're already talking about the problems with the luxury tax and what it means when trying to re-sign Sasha and Ronny. At some point the Lakers have to say it's enough, because adding a big contract for a great player may improve the chances for a title but eventually the addition makes it too difficult to sustain the roster's depth.

Not that I'm particularly worried about that problem, because adding Calderon without giving up at least Odom is highly unlikely. The value of a good PG is still high enough to make Luke + filler + lows picks a pipe dream isn't it? He's no Paul, Billups, or Nash, but teams tend to be willing to overpay for a PG, like Toronto is to keep their combo.

It's pipe, indeed. But Calderon won't be a happy $8M sitting on that bench behind Ford. I'm speculating that that's what's going to happen. A point forward would arguably serve that team better, given Ford's scoring prowess.

I think Buss would happily have the highest payroll in the league if he can surpass the Celtics in total rings. I understand that keeping roster depth is hard under the salary cap, but we've drafted incredibly well, lately.

Return to Los Angeles Lakers
