Celtic Playoff Coverage vs Red Sox

Post#1 » by rsceltic34 » Tue Mar 11, 2008 10:20 pm

I saw this one on celticsblog.com VERY GOOD QUESTION

What will Celtics coverage like be in the media(newspaper/radio/t.v) Im only saying this because in this town the Sox are and will always be king. It seems even though the Celtics are the #1 team in the NBA Red Sox spring training news outnumbers Celtics 10-1. I know the Celtics will get more coverage the further they go in the playoffs. But I think there will still be more pages of Sox regular season stuff no matter what."

Sad but i believe this is true just look at the Herald today 3 pages on spring training and 2 on the celtics and they just won #50

Not in the 80s......

Baseball has been losing popularity.. football has been gaining popularity...boston is the only city to not see this (Although the pats and sox are very close).

who cares

i honestly don't get all this stuff about media coverage

as long as the games are on, who cares how much time the media spends discussing them...you can't draw your own conclusions about what you just saw, you have to read and hear opinions?

i hope the Red Sox get more coverage...why should i care

I'm sure deep down inside you'd want the celts to get as much exposure as possible...it wouldn't hurt.

hey with us hardcore fans we realize the celts went from worst in the league to title contenders from this season to last.. but the bottom line is the celtics are title contenders for the first time in over 10 years, the red sox are contenders every year, so untill the celtics get back on the map we will be hearing more about the sox then the celts (on average per year, not particularly during the season). That's why the sox get the one hour pregame show, i think it's even one and a half hour on fridays, and they get the reality show and off day programs and the celts just got the half hour pregame show and celtics now (which is new now that they're good). Plus the sox got two hall of famers (eckersly, rice), maybe more?, working for their pre game show, which shows that the stars want to work with teams that are getting tons of media attention. We know the celts will be recognized when robert parish, tommy heinsohn, and john havlicek are doing our pregame show (did i just buture their names or guess right?)!

Whoa, that's cool. I agree 100% about hockey and soccer. I don't know how people can watch a game with such low scoring. Maybe that's why people fight so much in the crowd.

Well Rice isn't a Hall of famer (though he should be elected next winter), and eck is a HoFer because of his Oakland days.

If the Celtics want more coverage they should simply create their own TV station the way the Red Sox did, or better yet buy CSN. The reason the Red Sox get so much play on NESN is because they own NESN and thus have added interest in hyping their team. They have a radio deal with WEEI, so WEEI has added interest in hyping the team (The Celtics have a do deal with WEEI too, but for years they didn't, and even now the Red Sox contract is larger). The New York Times owns the Globe and is part owner of the Red Sox so they have interest in hyping the team. The Mets, Red Sox, and Yankees both saw the advantages of owning your own TV station. It is time the Celtics o down the same path.

good point... didn't the celtics used to be on nesn too? I remember them being on channel 51 at one point.

The only way I can see the celtics buying their own station is if they are planning on spending the money and continuing to be contenders after the garnett pierce allen era is over. Because no one is going to watch celtics programs if the team is in rebuilding mode (with the occasional early exit playoff team) year in and year out like the past 15 years.

Yeah that is true. The Red Sox do have the product to sell on NESN.

I wouldn't worry about the playoffs getting huge coverage when they begin. The regular season is just a formality at this point. Spring Training is always huge no matter what is going on, so that's to be expected.

Also, I think the pseudo-fact that the NBA playoffs are 6 months long has something to do with the media not over-covering the C's now.
