Replace Tim Duncan with Karl Malone from 1999-2007 ....

Post#1 » by JordansBulls » Wed Mar 12, 2008 8:39 pm

We usually always see if you were to replace Tim Duncan with KG, how many titles for the Spurs or KG, however what about Karl Malone? Malone was closer to being as good or better than Duncan than KG is.

IF you were to replace Tim Duncan with Karl Malone on the Spurs from 1999-2007, how many titles?

I gave them 2, the ones where The Admiral was still around because he could anchor the D.

In that regard KG is a lot better than Malone. The Spurs win by playing good team ball on offense and suffocating defense.

You didn't have an option for 0. You should.

I'm not sure he's good enough to make up for what Duncan brings anchoring a D. Maybe the first one, where Robinson was still pretty good.

I agree that when Robinson was playing at the C, Malone would have won a title with the Spurs.

Give DUNCAN a pass first PG, his stats would increase. DAMN you 4-1 down TP plays.

I'd give Malone one or two of these chips you denied him. Duncan is a finesse player and Karl was a Bruiser. I gotta wonder how many games he could have effected differently with his brute strength as well as his outside jumper.

My take as well. I think the Spurs still win 1999 pretty easily. Every title after that the Spurs had some real battles where Duncan's all world defense would be sorely missed.

I absolutely agree with most of the other posters:

robinson+malone in 1999 is a sure shot, but after that the team would miss the defense presence in duncan

1999 would be easy, after that, *MAYBE* 2004 with a really really old Malone.

Umm, what?

The iconic San Antonio play is the Parker/Duncan pick-and-roll... Yes, they have a more diverse offense than just a specialty set but c'mon...

zero. jordan would sneak up behind him and steal the ball every season in the waning moments of the deciding game...

If it was Malone at that age then probably one, maybe two.

But if it was Malone from say 91-99, then I saw Malone wins 4, maybe more as he is probably the best defender against Shaq this league has ever seen.

Karl could get under Shaq, and with Malone's body he could push Shaq around not to mention the Mailman's signature ball swipe was a very effective tool.

Maybe a more interesting question would be put Duncan on the Jazz from 1990-2000 and how many would the Jazz win.

I'm assuming you mean if they get the fresh and young Malone during this period? Well then honestly I can't see them getting any less than 2 titles. I'm sorry, but Malone in his prime was a FAR more dominant individual player than Duncan.

Just think of this, if you put Duncan in a Jazz uniform do you honestly believe Duncan would have made those 1997 and 1998 teams win against the Bulls? I'm talking about a 33 and 34 year old Duncan, not the prime Duncan in his 20s, since Malone was 33 and 34 when he made those finals' appearances.

Compare the 11th year Malone to the 11th year Duncan, and you'll see for yourself if Malone would lead the 07-08 Spurs team to a title.

Malone: 0.519 0.400 0.723 25.7ppg 9.8rpg 4.2apg 1.7spg .7bpg
Duncan: 0.504 0.000 0.723 19.8ppg 11.6rpg 3.2apg .8spg 1.9bpg

Or simply replace the Duncan that actually won the title last season, for a 10th year Malone:

Malone: 0.536 0.268 0.742 26.7ppg 10.6rpg 3.5apg 1.6spg 1.0bpg
Duncan: 0.546 0.111 0.637 20.0ppg 10.6rpg 3.4apg .8spg 2.4bpg

It's hard to say Malone couldn't have easily taken his place. If without Stockton, he'd be able to get those 20ppg easily, and he'd probably be getting 5+apg with Ginobili and Parker.

I'm a Jazz fan, so what. I'm not saying Malone is better Jordan, Wilt, Kareem, or any of those others, I'm not a homer, I really believe Duncan has had a better supporting cast than Malone has. Malone had Stockton, and Hornacek was a half decent, but that was in the later period of his career, but other than that they didn't have great individual players, Sloan was just able to make a great team out of two studs a great shooter and a ton of scrubs.

Malone through his first 11 years:
898 games 0.525 0.722 26ppg 10.9rpg 3.1apg 1.5spg .8bpg

Duncan's current averages in his 11th season:
806 games 0.508 0.683 21.7ppg 11.9rpg 3.2apg .8spg 2.4bpg

Malone's played 1476 games, so naturally his numbers dropped, but very slowly, until his final season where they obviously plummeted in an injury riddled season. Lets see Duncan in the next 8 years.
