Got a position of need (SF) and a young guy (24) with decent size (6'7 and 220) and a skillset we need (defensive player rather than 3 point shooting) and with some NBA realised potential (almost a triple double in an NBA game, although it was against Seattle). What I didn't want was a 30 year old dude that has been floating around the league for a decade but wasn't good enough to tack on to a contending teams 12th spot and was coming here to get a paycheck. I want someone that can grow into a more important role on our team - someone who hasn't realised their full potential. As the worst team in the league we have the unique ability to use actual NBA games to scout players, whereas playoff teams need to use summer leagues and pre-seasons to get a read on young guys.
Agreed. And I also like that with every move -- even a relatively meaningless one like this -- Riley is aiming to change the complacent culture of this team.
Exit Shaq, enter two feisty defenders who don't give up on a play in Marion and Banks. Exit Smush, enter a feisty defender with a reputation as a hard worker in Bobby Jones.
Instead of signing boneheads and trying to change them into his kind of player, Riley is back to signing his kind of player. Hopefully that'll be the theme this offseason as well.
