Riley the Scout

Post#1 » by tsherkin » Thu Mar 13, 2008 3:29 pm

Hey guys,

Sorry if you've seen this already but I couldn't find it on the board, so here's an articleabout Riley's scouting actions.

It talks about how Arizon is responsible for Riley's shift in focus.

Among the more interesting notes in the article:

- Riley will be seeing the top 5 picks personally

Like Riley, Knicks coach Isiah Thomas also holds the dual title of team president. But despite his team also being lottery bound, Thomas said he did not consider leaving the bench.

Thomas called Riley basketball "royalty" and said any of Riley's moves should be considered beyond question.

- the Heat signed Bobby Jones, but thought about Gerald Green and might try out some other prospects

Neat stuff.

EDIT:

Also...

Riley said the Heat considered Gerald Green and Sean Banks before signing Jones and could use the remaining weeks of the season to try out additional prospects.

"We're allowed to bring in up to four players and work them out for two days," Riley said. "We might do that next week, sign another guy to a 10-day, if, in fact, we feel he deserves it."

EDIT 2:

Riley confirmed Ron Rothstein would replace him in his absence.

Why does Riley do the scouting? Doesn't Miami have scouts under salary?

If you had final say on a Top 5 pick -- and thus the credit or the blame for years to come -- wouldn't you want to see the players for yourself?

And I don't mean just what they show on TV. I mean watch their EVERY move during a game, including how they interact with their coach and teammates during timeouts, how hard they run the court when they're not in the play (thus not on camera), etc ...

Riley scouted Rose today. Rose had a mediocre game.

Sort of. Wright's playing time evaporated when Ron subbed in for Riley last year.

I bet Ron doesn't even put hi in games this year.
