What we really need
what we really need is a SF that can play defense. It always seems like the other team's SF kills us.

Nah, what we need is next year. We will have a slasher SG/SF in Rudy Fernandizzle as well as a beast down low starting and a defensive minded vet off the bench.
If we got a starting point guard and had either JJ out of town or on the bench I like our chances. If we aint got the pick give me Antonio Daniels. I NEED A P G. JJ has to go or has to be kept in that combo scoring guard off the bench that we were so successful with earlier in the season.
Our needs are a C that is more then the 250 lbs. or so that JP is and a mo fuzzin BEAST downlow; and thankfully we can look at our PG through the draft with atleast the DDDDDDD JJJJJJ AAAAAUGUSTINE!!!!! Or plz get rid of whoever for a 270+ beast off the bench no Lafrentz jump shooter.

yea you add a pg to this team and it will be scary. Roy played soooo well off the ball in the all-star game with cp3 (course everyone looks good with him on their team). If we can get hinrich for raef or darius plus jack and frye I'm game but the more and more I see of him I think he may not just be in a slump even though I'd like to believe that since he can be had for sooo cheap
. I still wanna keep webster though the only pieces IMO that I would have on the trade block are, Blake/Jack/Frye/Raef/Miles/our 1st/Freeland/and our 2nd rounders. Course I'm not KP so who knows what he values but that's just me...

Antoine Wright and Jarvis Hayes? Really? Pietrus is the only one of those who can actually play defense.
It's not that we need "next year" or that we NEED a SF who can defend; we need our current SFs to play better defense. I think Webster will mature into a better defender over the next couple of years and Outlaw will become a good team defender.

Gotta keep Webster. He's an amazing athlete, just needs to mature and gain confidence. Remember his 23 point quarter? He was confident. Be patient. All we need is a point that can defend, and Oden.

While I would love to keep Webster, Outlaw, and Jones, its become pretty obvious that one of them is going to have to be moved this summer.
I dont think We need to make a move to get a SF who plays defense. All 3 of them play decent enough defense. What we need to do is consolidate our SF position to help us get a PG.
Theres only 48 minutes to go around at that spot and thats obviously only enough for 2 of them. Outlaw wont get enough minutes at PF next year because Przbilla gets moved to back up, and Frye is now full time back up PF. Frye will provide about 15 minutes off the bench if hes still here, and even if he wasnt, Outlaw needs more than 15 minutes playing PF. One of those 3 will most likely be moved for a PG and our SF rotation will be set
Webster/ Outlaw
Webster/ Jones
Outlaw/ Webster
Outlaw/ Jones
Im fine with any of those scenarios. While I would rather keep Outlaw, and move Webster (I just dont see Jones leaving.. Hes the absolute ideal backup for the longhaul, and wont have nearly the trade value anyways), I still have hopes for Webster and do realize that Outlaw will probably fetch more in the open market. In Pritchard I trust

I don't think we need to go out and get a good defensive small forward. One of the really good things about Nate is that he's always emphasizing defense. When you've got a coach that does that it's highly likely that guys will improve on that side of the court. It seems like the guys we have are continuing to get better on defense. If guys have the necessary athletic ability they can become great defenders under a coach like Nate.
Given a couple seasons Webster could be that kind of defender. Like Dogmont said, he's an amazing athlete. His defense is tons better than it was last season. He's had flashes of being a great defender. I remember a game against Denver where he completely shut down Carmello Anthony in crunch time.
Martell's biggest problem, and this is a problem that LOTS of NBA players seem to have, is that when he isn't doing well on offense his defense suffers as well. IF is offense comes around as a lot of us expect it eventually will then it will go a long way toward helping him become that great defender.

I know it's rather simplistic, but what portland needs is more talent.
Some is obviously on the way with oden. Perhaps some more with Rudy. And certainly more talent will arrive with the development and maturation of the players.
But they need a bit more with an additional player or two, and especially in the backcourt.
