Iguodala vs Roy revisited

Post#1 » by dbodner » Sat Mar 15, 2008 4:55 pm

This was brought up a few months ago, when the Blazers were the darlings of the nba, the Sixers at about a .350 winning percentage, and the consensus was Roy was more efficient, didn't turn the ball over, a better leader, and was on an overachieving Blazers team. Since that time, Iguodala has increased his scoring, increased his efficiency, lowered his turnovers, and the Sixers are pushing for a top 5 playoff seed.

I'd still probably take Roy, but it's amazing how close (both their individual production and teams success) they are:
Sixers: 32-34
Blazers: 34-32

They're both practically the same age (roy's 5 months younger).
Roy: 19.7 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 5.8 apg, 1.1 spg, 1.9 topg, 45.6% fg%, 33.2% 3pt%, 1.21 pps
Iguodala: 19.7 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 4.6 apg, 2.0 spg, 2.7 topg, 45% fg%, 31.6% 3pt%, 1.25 pps

The only stat that's really different has been assists, although iguodala did average 5.7 last year when he had more shooters around him.

Which player has had a better individual year? Which teams success is more surprising? Which player has had more impact in their teams success? Which player would you take for the future? Are either of them capable of being the best players on championship teams?

I said it before, and I'll say it again,

I'd still take Iggy.

teams are playing more within their conferences now and that tends to explain the 'tightening' of portland and philly records. Philly is 2 games under .500 and is in the 7th EC playoff spot. Portland is 2 games over .500 and is 7 games out of the WC playoffs.

As a blazer fan, I'd obviously pick Roy. I do think he's having a better year and is the leader of the 3rd youngest team in NBA history that has surprised the league. He's also the focus of opponents defenses every game and is constantly double-teamed and still puts up those numbers.

That's not to say Iggy isn't a fine young player as well. I think Roy is a little better but the gap is small. As a matter of fact, Iggy would probably play well with Roy. They'd be a dynamic duo... :D . I'll be interested to see what happenes with Iggy's contract negotiations with the 76ers this summer.

I'd still take Roy pretty easily. I just like Roy's ability to create shots for himself A LOT more than Iguodala's...

Wow, they really are like the same player statistically. I don't see enough of Roy to decide here... but the answer is clearly Iguodala when I put on my homer hat.

How is Roy's defense?

Roy's one of the most overrated players, while Iggy is one of the most underrated. I still think Iggy is better and that Roy isn't a top 30 player in the league; definitely not the superstar ESPN was hyping him to be.

lol. I think roy was a bit overrated and iguodala has been a bit underrated this year because of turning down the contract and then being frustrated w/ the team early in the season.

now if I take my homer colored glasses off... they are essentially equals. iguodala has a bit of an edge defensively, roy offensively. Roy's injury history still freaks me out a bit.

roy doesn't have enough of an NBA career to have registered much of an injury history. The talus bone issue last season and the tailbone bruise for 2 games this year.

But that does bring up another point: while Roy is only a half year younger then Iggy, the difference in experience is significant. Iggy has played in over 300 games while roy has only played in 119. Compare Roy at 120 games to Iggy at 120 and there is a substantial advantage for Roy. Obviously this doesn't account for relative physical maturity, but actual NBA experience is very valuable and Iggy has a tremendous advantage there that isn't reflected in a statistical advantage.

I take Roy without any moment of hesitation for obvious reasons.

true but experience can factor in many ways. Roy's experience in college counts for something. also, iguodala, over the last year and a half, is learning to be the go to scorer for the first time in life. the strides he's made from december to now are pretty tremendous.

this is and probably will continue to be a really interesting comparison of 2 very good players.

I'd still take Roy.

It's going to take more from Philly playing good ball in the east for a relatively brief period of time to convince me that Iggy is FP material.

Were you hearing some of the stuff ESPN was saying about Roy? They were saying that he'd be like the next Jordan, he was better than prime Penny, etc??? IMO he won't even be as good as Tony Parker or Manu Ginobili.

Let's look at Roy's stats.
19-4-5... and not top 30 in any stat. Plus, the Blazers are losing now, since they are playing real teams. If Roy were such a good leader, then why can't Roy beat any of the good teams then?...

And don't even bring Baron in this, he's >>>>>>> Roy. Hell, I'd say Kevin Martin and Tony Parker (injured) > Roy.
