Final Farewell
It is with a heavy heart that I bring up this Topic.
I joined this forum the day they traded Gary Payton and Desmond Mason. It seems like just yesterday that I was reading Sonictecture and other mods explaining HOW to post on these forums since I was not very versed in message board posting. I have read every topic on this boards twice a day ever since joining. Although I do not post much I do enjoy reading comments from everyone of you and consider most of you family. So here we go:
I am flying to Utah for next weekends game. I live on the East Coast and it is clear to me that it will probably be my LAST NBA game ever. I will never watch another game from start to finish or support the NBA in anyway. I wanted to do something to show my appreciation for the thirty special years of joy the Seattle Supersonics have personally given me. So I need some ideas on how to respectfully do it.
I am currently leaning towards a Rulon Gardner type thing. For those of you who do not know, after Rulon Gardner lost his last Olympic Greco Roman Wrestling match he took off his shoes and left them on the mat and walked away never to compete again. Supposedly it was an ancient tradition when champions walked away from the sport they loved. So after the game is over and the teams have left the floor, I think I am going to lay down my remaining jerseys and Seattle Supersonics stuff and walk away forever.
Anyone have any ideas?

Thats a good story about Rulon Gardner, I didnt know that.
I think your idea actually would be pretty cool. I would consider doing something like that someday. I would say though that I think you should wait. The team will at least be here for another two years. I guess what I am saying is that I don't think you should be so quick to give in. The fight is not over... yet.

I agree with Bennith...it's far from being over for us. We could have them for another two years if the court battle goes our way. You never know what can happen in those two years.
Plus, don't forget, for some reason, Washingtonians don't react until it's the last possible second in the face of adversity. We've seen it before with the Sehawks and Mariners. The fight isn't over yet.
Don't give up, that's what 'they' want you to do.

(1) I can't believe Splifton's post count is only at 48. I would have thought it was at least 100. I guess his posts have been relatively high-impact. I'd hate to see him give up at this stage.
(2) I'm embarrassed that I had never heard the Rulon Gardner story, since I'm a wrestler and should know this stuff. Gardner is an awesome, awesome dude.
(3) I'm going to try the Rulon Gardner approach right now. Honestly: at this very moment, as I write this, I am wearing a Sonics T-shirt and Sonics shorts. (pause) Ahh, it actually feels quite liberating.

Would anyone be interested in tickets to the season tickets holders party this Tuesday? You would meet the players and coaches and be there with all the big wig season ticket holders. they give you an autograph book which you should be able to get filled with all the players. catered etc. I would think a true sonics fans would like nothing more than to be there for what could POSSIBLY be the last one. maybe even a chance to say goodbye, or maybe even see Clay??
I have four tickets to the event, $50 a ticket if interested. PM me

I love that Rulon Gardner story. It should be a verb, like "I Rulon Gardnered my shoes at the last Sonics game."
Christine Gregoire Rulon Gardnered her pride a few days ago.
Howard Shultz Rulon Gardnered Sonic fans when he sold the team.
I Rulon Garnered my pants right after the Helmet Catch.
PS Splifton, No need to be so dramatic just yet. I was thinking of similar things the other day, like putting a sign on a billboard reading, "Will the last Sonic leaving Seattle please turn out the lights?" But it's not over yet. Let's see if the City can pony up the money before we we start saying, "Milk was a bad choice."

Splifton, I totally get what you're saying. Kind of feel that way myself. But I'm sticking with the "Seattle finds the other half the $, along with the $150M figures out a decent way forward, the court enforces the specific use clause, a grown up conversation happens, Bennett agrees to a franchise swap with either Memphis or New Orleans" theory. Stranger things have happened. And didn't our coaches always tell us to play hard right until the final buzzer?

I'd go too, but I have to work. I loved going to those parties growing up, especially the one in the late 90's at the Science Center. That was a blast. I also ejoyed the one at the Key when they honored Nate..I believe that was in 1996. Ahhh memories.
Where are they holding this year's party? I'm surprised they even have one this year--Clay didn't cancel it?

The party is at the Key. 6-9.
It will be interesting to see if Clay skimped at all, even more interesting to see if he is there. If I see him, I'll ask him how he views the people who's hearts he's breaking by trying to move their team.
