The market for SFs is getting cheaper. All he has to do is look at what Caron Butler, Gerald Wallace, Josh Howard, and Prince are making. Richard Jefferson tops off at 15 mil per year.

So I don't see why Marion, at 30, should be getting more than an average of 12-13, despite his resume. Those other guys can at least create their own shot, and shoot 3s at a higher percentage.

Rashard Lewis messed it up for everybody though.
Problem is his agent, Dan Fegan, also the agent of Arenas & Varejao. You know the reputation of this agent that he ask a lot and its hard to deal with.

That's true. Hopefully Fegan's learned his lesson.

Sidekicks can carry a team when the main star goes down, thats not marions game. Marion is geared more to a super role player, very important but not someone who can carry a team. Would you spend over 12 mil a season for a player like that?

People who keep comparing Marion to Caron Butler, Josh Howard and Ty Prince forget the fact that Marion has been in the league WAY longer than those 3 players and worked his salary to where is at today because of his performances and not by accident.

Caron Butler IS going to make $12 mil and more per season soon. Ty Prince and Josh Howard, while very good players, they are not in the same category with Caron Butler and/or a younger Shawn Marion.

I agree that Marion is way longer than those 3 players but he has a better 1st year salary in his contract extension he signed after his rookie contract.

Marion is now 29 and was drafted in 1999. He is now in the 5th year of his 6 year contract he signed in 2003, earning $16.4m. Caron Butler will earn $10.56m in his 5 year and he will be 31 years old by that time. Caron's salary in his 1st year of his new contract is around $7m compare to Marion $13.5m.

Marion already receives $13.5m in his 1st extension compare to Caron who is just about to receive it probably in his 2nd extension. Ty Prince and Josh Howard may not be in the same category of Marion but the difference in talent is not much to warrant the difference in salary.

You do understand that Marion and Butler signed their extensions under different CBA agreements, right? You are truly wasting your time comparing salary structures not to mention that the market and situations when they signed their contracts were different.

If Caron Butler was a free agent this summer, he could easily command a contract in the $13 mil per season just like Marion was worth his contract when he signed it. But just like every HUGE contract (like Shaq's now), when a player ages a bit in a league where fans are in love with younger and potential over substance and quality, his contract becomes bothersome. Caron became an All Star AFTER he signed his extension just like Marion. Marion was a bargain when he was making all star games and playing in the olympics a couple of years ago.

Its true and your point is Caron will get the $12m soon, right? I'm just telling here that it will take the 2nd extentsion compare to Marion who got it in his 1st extension.

You also mentioned Prince and Howard are not in the category of Marion thats why I mentioned the HUGE difference in salary while the difference in talent is not (huge).

The problem is that he is looking for superstar money and thats one of the reasons we traded him as we didn't think he would've signed for a cheaper contract (8-12 million).

Anyone know if Marion is gonna play this week ? He already missed 6 games this season and he never missed more than 6 since his rookie year in 1999-2000 when he missed 31. Thank you for any responses.

I love what marion brings to the miami heat.Is he a STAR? No! but is he a Great player? YES! Every team has its star but the one thing people for get about when talking title is the role players. Marion is one of the best. The Real question that should be posted is, How much will marion Ask For and Is he Worth it?

If he asks for 12 million or less-IF this is the case then im all for marion. The guy will be a great 3rd scorer and at times 2nd scorer. He brings Defense,Shooting and Heart to the heat

If he ask for 13 million or More-See you later. Ill spend my money on some1 else.

Dream contract-Marion OPT out next year and resigns for 4 years 45 million

Return to Miami Heat
