Calderon could just take a one year tender if needed, and become an UFA at the end of the next year. It would be a gamble. He'd be the starter for all of a season rather than 3/4. But he may decide--especially if he wanted to leave Toronto--that if he plays out this next year and enters FA that there should be around 5-10 teams that would have the cap space to sign him.

Good point. I forgot about that option. Was thinking of teams offering him deals, and those just getting matched, not thinking about him turning them down. Well, I suppose it is possible, but if that's the case, I can also see him taking the MLE to play with Gasol in LA. He would get to play with a better Spanish player, and with a better team, at least currently.

TJ Ford has been playing well and wouldn't be surprised at all if Ford gets his starting position back by the beginning of next season.
It maybe a sign and trade deal with Portland if one did happen involving Jarrett Jack reuniting with his buddy Chris Bosh.
How about this trade on draft day? (since there is nothing else on Toronto's roster to trade for).
Jose Calderon (S&T) & '08 1st to Portland
Jarrett Jack, Channing Frye & '08 2nd to Toronto
Toronto needs a deeper bench and help at the PF/C. Calderon, Blake and Rodriguez would make it for an interesting core of PGs.

I can't imagine Toronto agreeing to that unless Calderon makes it absolutely clear he's not going to resign with them. It's pretty fair (no matter what Raps fans think), but Frye would be sitting behind Bosh and possibly behind Bargnani at his natural position. I would think they would want Jack and Martell or Jack and Outlaw, and most likely would want to exchange picks for this year.
If KP can't move up in the draft to get the guy he really wants, I think this would be a really nice move for us to make even if we have to trade out of the lottery. We simply don't need more mediochre first round picks.

I would do any deal involving Jack and anyone on the team aside from the obvious 3 for Calderon, anyone who wouldn't I think is nuts. Theres only three people on the team that are untouchable, even as good as Outlaw has played for most of the season with the exception of recently I would not consider him untouchable... Especially not if were talking a Calderon quality PG! Also I totally agree with you on the trading out of the lottery thing if we don't have a shot at Beasly or Rose.

I posted something similar on this story a few days ago. I don't see it as a positive development for Rudy or other Spanish players considering joining a NBA team. I'm not sure how much Rudy himself will read into it, but I could see the Spanish b-ball federation putting some pressure on Rudy and other prospects that "think a little harder" on whether coming to the NBA is the best thing.
Joining the Blazers IMHO is the best thing long term for Rudy. However, given this current situation I'm sure the Spanish b-ball federation sees things differently.

The more i think about it, the less confident I become with how Rudy will fit in our lineup. The only thing I can see working is him at the two and Roy at the one. I guess in theory we could just replace Jack with him and have Roy play point with Rudy in the game (right now, Jack still ends up bringing the ball up the court a lot). But I think that some people would have to play out of their natural position.

If you could get hold of Calderon or, even better, Gilbert Arenas it would fast-track the Blazers in a massive way.
My feeling is that a veteran PG would be the way to go, and keep the pick to draft a SF.
We won't have any cap space this summer. So the only way we'd have a shot at Calderon or Arenas is via a S&T.
However, I agree with you quite a bit. I think getting a veteran PG is the way to go for the Blazers. Getting a young PG with potential certainly isn't the worst thing in the world, but I think a proven commodity can do a lot for this team.
Also, I'd really like to draft a guy like Greene. I was interested in him back when he was projected to be Top 5 material, and since that time, his stock seems to have fallen so that he might be available when we're pick.

I would also be willing to take out Toronto's 1st and throw in our 1st, Blake and Outlaw. Making it a lop-sided looking...
Jose Calderon (S&T) to Portland
Jarrett Jack, Channing Frye, Travis Outlaw, Blake & '08 1st to Toronto
That wouldn't work under the cap because Calderon would become BYC and everything would break. It's a shame Toronto doesn't have any ridiculously stupid long term contracts. Cause I'd happily throw in LaFrentz for anybody they wanted.
But the closest thing they have is Rasho, who's contract is the same length and LaFrentz. So no help there.
We're not giving Calderon the respect he deserves in this thread. The dude is All-Star quality. There were a number of people complaining that he was not on the All-Star team this season.
This is going to sound like a ridiculous statement. But if KP called Toronto asking about Jose they would probably ask what it would take to get Aldridge.
To go a level beyond ridiculous, I'd consider it.
Which starting lineup do you like better...
Oden, Aldridge, Webster, Roy, Blake
OR
Oden, Frye, Webster, Roy, Calderon
