STARS EYE ORLANDO

Point guard Jason Williams of the Miami Heat isn't the only one who will go into free agency this summer hoping the Orlando Magic will give him a call. With the Magic having so many guards in the final year of their contracts -- and with center Dwight Howard locked in for many years -- there are players all over the league hoping for a ride to Orlando.

Shooting guard Corey Maggette of the Los Angeles Clippers will be another one looking to see what the Magic will do, which is why he smiled last week when he was asked about opting out of the final year of his contract to become a free agent this summer. Maggette has an option to make $8.2 million with the Clips next season, but all the losing now seems to have worn him out. If Elton Brand leaves this summer, he might do the same.

The Magic probably could get him for the mid-level exception ($5.5 million) if they extend it out for five years. Maggette started his career in Orlando, but he was traded after one year during the salary cap purge of 2000.

Whats 3 mill a year? Maggette could find that in his couch. 3 mil a year or 3 championships in 3 years?

If there was a way to sign him to the MLE that means at least 5 years of a Dwight/Shard/Maggette/Nelson starting lineup (barring a trade). If we could extend Hedo...that gives us a set starting lineup for a long time.

Chemistry is a factor that often gets over looked. Just by having the same nucleus together for an extended period of time we will continue to get better year after year.

PG Nelson
SG Maggette
SF Turkoglu
PF Lewis
C Howard

Fill the bench with a defensive PG, a banger for board help, and a PF/C that can step out and hit a mid range jumper to stretch the floor for Dwight and bam we have titles.

This is something that a few of us have noted in the past.

The sort of forgotten "If you build it, he will come." aspect.

I'm not implying that Maggette will sign here for the MLE. What I am suggesting though, is that if you build a top team, you're going to have a much easier chance at landing decent/good players at the discounted price that everyone wants to land them for, but only top teams realistically have a shot at.

Hell, if we "have to" to give Maggette the full MLE and extend it out as far as possible, that's still a steal.

I'd actually have some conscious problems with that type of a deal because it'd mean his whole career he'd never get a salary that was fair.

Corey is a baller, I'd love to see him back here :-). His potential was evident from the very start and we traded it away for a guy on his last legs...

Can't agree with you more Devin. We might not have all that respect that our players want, but we sure can reel in some big names who are tired of being on poopy teams. Players that want to win so bad they will take pay cuts lol  Screw respect, other teams players are noticing isn't that good enough.

Other than our cap-space ;-), Rashard said he wanted to play with Dwight. For me, this an example of this.

Now with the giant step we've taken forward, hopefully more (players) will notice us an up and comer and want to be apart of it.

I understand the appeal of Maggette as an individual player, however, I've always gotten the impression that he's a guy that needs the ball in his hands to be effective. Granted I haven't seen a ton of Clipper games, but I don't know if he's also the physical perimeter defender that the Magic need at shooting guard. Unless Jameer grows six inches & learns how to fight over a screen (honestly it's PAINFUL to watch his P&R defense), then his backcourt mate needs to be a Shane Battier defender/shooter type... Corey certainly has the the tools to play this role, but my impression of his career thus far has not yielded those kind of results.

If he's willing to play for that amount, then it's fair.

as for needing the ball, I think he has that persona now, in LA because he's had to carry that club a lot, and when he was out same with brand...I honestly think that here, he would be exceptional...he gives us something that we really need, something that is highly overlooked and that is trips to the stripe. Playoff games come down to FT's a lot more often than people think.

on top of that Maggette plays fairly well off the ball and his defense doesn't suck...

Maggette for the MLE? you'd be crazy not to ink him...

^ exactly...Question is...How do we want off the bench?

Evans with the intangibles and hustle or

Bogans with the clutch 3's

I say Maggette/Evans is SOLID

If we could get Maggette for the mle, it would be a huge coup for us. There are rumors now that the Clippers will try and go after Arenas this summer, and possibly let Brand go. A sign and trade would probably have to be made to get Gilbert, so a Brand for Arenas swap might be in order. Either way I see Corey leaving that situation. He's tired of losing and reshuffling the cards isn't going to work. Hopefully we will start to see a Dwight Howard effect, where guys want to come and play with the top center in the league and give us a discount for it. I can't wait to see what might be available to us for the league minimum. Dooling better watch out how much leveraging that he does, he could go the Deshawn route very easily.

For the record, I think Duhon is going to have a lot of suitors this off-season. We would have a much better chance of obtaining Jason Williams, who I think could be a quality back-up. Similarly, Keyon will have a lot of teams after him, so resigning him may be more difficult than we think.

I struggle to believe Arenas would sign with the Clippers if they lost Brand. He would be going to a much worse situation than he is currently in.

I am still holding out hope that he has his eye on Orlando. Doubtful, but not impossible.

If we stick with Lewis at PF and Hedo at SF, Maggette would be the best possible addition this off-season.
