TI - Haslem for Mo (Haslem may be on block this summer)

Post#1 » by paulpressey25 » Wed Mar 19, 2008 5:37 pm

Ira Winderman notes the obvious in his column this morning:

"....The question therefore could become whether Haslem has played his final game for his hometown team. The Miami High and University of Florida product has been with the Heat since entering the NBA in 2003 off a season in France as an undrafted free agent.

Should the Heat land the top selection in the NBA draft lottery, it likely would select Kansas State power forward Michael Beasley. Beyond that, midseason acquisition Shawn Marion has spent the bulk of his brief Heat tenure at power forward..."

Does Mo for Haslem work for people around here? Could we get the Heat to add something more?

GAD, how would Mo's BYC play into this for a July 2008 trade?

Haslem is owed $6.5 and $7.1mm in each of the next two seasons.

Fine done deal. Originally I wanted them to give us Wright but all of a sudden Riley sounds like he wants to keep him.

If they are willing to give up Wright then perhaps we can dump CV on them.

The question is who is the starting PG if we do a deal like this though?

I like that move alot. Then you can look to deal either Yi or CV (probably CV) for either a pg or a sf, or in a larger package involving redd or some of our bad contracts.

I know Sessions hasn't done much, but I like his future here, at least as a strong backup pg option.

One scenario could be flipping CV for Lowry to follow up this deal, and from there you can run an open competition between lowry and sessions for the pg spot, and draft a small forward in the lottery.

Lowry/Sessions
Redd/Bell
Lotto PIck/Simmons/Mason
Haslem/Yi
Bogut/Haslem/Gadz

The only thing I don't like is that I'd prefer a bigger guy that can play both center and powerforward, so the third big (Yi or CV) can play with both players.

I believe Haslem is 6'9, and isn't very bulky, so playing backup center as well is probably out of the question.

Have them throw in Chris Quinn.....he, Sessions, Bell, draft pick can work it by committee....or we make another team rebuild trade and try to pick up a PG elsewhere.....

FAM....doesn't Mo then carry with him some additional restrictions on trades after June 30th? From what you note, we can do a Haslem/Mo even up then after June 30th?

You can't be serious about Chris Quinn..I don't care how good we made him look, he isn't a guy I would deal for to fight for the starting PG spot.

We need vet leadership at the point or a guy who has all the tools to lead a team similar to what we are seeing from Paul and Deron Williams.

I don't see the point in trading Mo for Haslem. Mo is more talented with respect to position and we have two PF prospects and we need to figure out what each have. Haslem would be a good player to acquire if we were already a contender and needed a bruiser type PF, but that isn't the case.

And yes, Quinn is horrible and Sessions is not ready to be a full-time PG.

This makes us a worse team and just stunts Yi (and CV if he's here next year) even more.

Can't think of any other restrictions off the top of my head, but I'm not nearly as encyclopedic as GAD about these things. I usually just re-read the Coon FAQ to make sure I'm not forgetting anything.

As far as doing the trade straight up, Haslem's $6.575 million salary x 125% + $100k = $8.318 million. Mo's salary next year is $8.353 million. So you'd be $35k short on the Heat end, but you could add in Joel Anthony or Alex Johnson and then it would appear to work.

You could probably get more for Mo. There's no real discernible difference in production between Nick Collison and Haslem. Maybe Collison/Ridnour for Mo works. I dunno. I just think the Bucks can get more for Mo than a 6'8" PF who shined because of Shaq. Unless his 12 and 9 and .4 blks this year impresses you.

Haslem is a guy built for teams with star players. That ain't the Bucks. He's essentially a younger Skinner.

ive been thinking about a TI along the lines of this...this is only if miami gets pick 1 or 2 and we get between 4-6. We will have to add salary to make it work this is just the base.

Milwaukee trades

Mo/CV/pick 4-6/future 1st

Miami

Wright/haslem/1st or 2nd pick

we draft rose if hes there and end up w. a lineup of

Rose/Ivey/sessions
Redd/Bell
Wright/mason/simmions
Haslem/Yi
Bogut/Gadz

Miami line up is

Mo
Wade
Marion
CV
Hibbert

I'm not planning on Quinn being the solution at PG....but he's another body to throw in there at backup.

Showtime has the second deal lined up....CV for Lowry. Or if we draw lucky lotto and get #2 pick we can take Rose.

I'm not worried about Yi/Haslem because they are different players and can compliment each other. There will be sets where they can play together on the court. And Haslem's contract isn't like Marion or Brand where you can't justify them (Brand/Marion) being on the same roster with Yi. Yi can still start here. Haslem can get 30mpg.

Now you've got as your core Bogut/Yi/Haslem/Lowry

Somewhere we need a SF and a SG. We can address those two positions with the combination of Redd and our lotto pick somehow. I realize the Redd for Nocioni/Hughes trade may not appeal to Chicago, but that would do it. Then hope Mayo is still there. Roster's done.

Haslem played backup c pretty successfully for the Heat during Wade's rookie year. He backed up Odom and Brian Grant, and the Heat only went 7-deep but were playing great by the end of the year and even got a few wins against the supremely talented #1 seed Pacers in the first round.

Mo is more talented by position and the Heat would have to throw in Wright or Cook to make it fair, but assuming the Bucks traded Yi or CV I would gladly do this trade because I think Haslem can slide over to center for 10-15 mpg and he's a nice complement to Bogut. And he's intelligent. Please lord give the Bucks some intelligent players already!

I guess I'm just not a big Haslem fan. I think there are players in the second round of this draft (Dorsey, Hardin, Gibson) that can bring similar rebounding/defense. Mo has talent, I realize he has deficiencies, but I'm not into just giving him away.

I thought that too then I started to watch a bunch of Heat games this year. I'll do an infomercial on him:

a) His 12/9 isn't a whole lot different than a certain #1 overall pick on our current roster that is looking for a big extension this offseason. Haslem does play smart. Watching him this year I do see him doing the little things.

b) I tried to figure out why our team this year is even worse than last year and came to the conclusion that the loss of Skinner is massive. Even a bad and old Skinner helped us last year. Young Skinner really helped us in 2003-04.

c) Do you want Mo as your starting PG? If the answer is no, there aren't many teams where he works given his now big contract. But the Heat are a team where Mo really works well. And they can take on his contract.

d) I like Haslem over Collison if I had to choose between the two. He is more athletic than Collison.

I'd argue that Haslem's 12/9 is quite a bit different from Bogut's 13.5/9. Haslem has played with a top 5 player the last 4 years or whatever it is, and played next to Shaq nearly all of that time as well. Most of Haslem's points come on wide open jumpshots.

Bogut has never played with a star player. He also plays with one of the highest FGA backcourts in the NBA, if not the highest. Bogut can also faciliate offense and block shots much better than Haslem.

Haslem is what he is. A somewhat undersized, strong PF that can step out and hit the jumpshot and give you solid defense. He has zero back to the basket game, cannot pass, and if you put him on a team without a star just looks like another body out there.

There are some athletic PF's we can draft in the second. They don't have the shooting ability of Haslem, but they can bring some rebounding and probably more shotblocking.

Haslem is the exact kind of player we need to change the attitude of this team. I think Mo would be incredible for the heat and this kind of deal could make us look bad, but i think making moves for great role players is necessary if we're ever going to exorcise the selfish and lazy elements that have pervaded our team since the Big 3 days.
