Garden May Be Renamed.......Again

Post#1 » by Datruth345 » Thu Mar 20, 2008 1:11 am

TD Banknorth said it will change its name to TD Commerce Bank following its $8.5 billion purchase of a New Jersey institution, the company said today.

The name change will occur at the banks' combined operations through next year. A spokeswoman said the company is still studying how it might change the name on the Boston arena where it has naming rights, now known as the TD Banknorth Garden.

Just call it the "TD Commerce Bank Boston Garden," so we can all just refer to it as the Boston Garden....

Sigh.

IMO they should just go with TD Garden. Nice and simple and it provides future flexibility (both in terms of branding and accuracy).

I have mixed feelings about naming rights.

Yep, TD Banknorth is a wholly owned subsidiary of a Canadian bankin company - Toronto Dominion Bank.

I wonder if the bank has more depth than us?

I disagree Boston Garden should be in there. because it isn't the Garden. As an homage to the REAL garden - call it something else.

Naming rights have destroyed any connections fans could potentially have to an arena/stadium/ballpark. Why do you think, among other reasons, people cling so much to Fenway Park, Wrigley Field (although maybe not for long!), Yankee Stadium (not for long), Madison Square Garden, etc?

I say ditch the naming rights and call it Boston Garden or even New Boston Garden.

Does the NBA *really* need the extra 5 million or so per year the naming rights bring in?
It's still 17 to 11!!!!

That was one of the previous names, right? Anyone remember how many names the Garden has had so far?

Shawmut Center?
Fleet Center
TD BankNorth Garden

Is that it?

Good thing I wasn't drinking when I read that, or my monitor would be a mess. Good one!

The "TD" at the beginning of the name just makes the whole thing clunky. It doesn't roll off the tongue. Corporate names are disgusting.

Let's re-name it the ScalaCenter and be done with it.

Next step is letting corporate sponsors rename the team. The Boston Toronto Dominion Commerce Bank Celtics anyone? Might have to switch from shorts to pants just to fit that all in.

I wish they would just call it the Boston Garden and write the company that owns it in little letters. This way we won't have to chance it like I change my underwear, which is once every few years.
