New GM Brainstorming Session

As per middle school class rules, brainstorming sessions are not a time to be critical. Just throw ideas out there before you have a chance to second guess them. Critical thinking and narrowing down can happen once there are lots of names on the board. I think it would be great if we could come up with 50 names before ranking them. Here are a few.

Donnie Walsh - veteran front office guy.

Doug Collins - knows the league I guess.

Bill Simmons - passionate about basketball, understands CBA, would entertain and interact with us fans.

Kenny Smith - understands that you need a top talent first, has great suits.

Jay Bilas - was most vocal about saying that Chris Paul should be #1 prior to the '05 draft. Probably would be a good drafter in the NBA.

I know many people don't like him, but I would be more than fine with a Doug Collins hire. He was a good regular season coach, poor playoff coach, but as far as knowing the game/diagnosing team issues, he is one of the best IMO. If you listen to him during games, he identifies where a teams strengths and weaknesses are almost immediately. Definitely a smart basketball mind, just not as good working with players. I think management fits him more than coaching because he's more removed from the player personality point of it.

Walsh is my first pick by a wide margin, but I wouldn't be upset with Collins. Collins wouldn't hold any favorites and I think would be pretty objective about what needs to be done with the roster.

I know many will likely disagree.

I'd give JVG a shot, he's alot smarter than I think most of us realized.

I have no idea who else... Karen Bryant from the Seattle Storm :lol:

have you seen the roster she's put together this year? Sweet jesus.

JVG is another good call as well. I remember the game he did when the Bucks were on TNT, he diagnosed our team better in five minutes than anyone from the Bucks has in the last seven years.

JVG and Kiki are both good ideas. I'd be fine with Kiki V. I agree about Collins too, a first rate basketball mind who's more cerebral and possibly removed from the day-to-day. I wonder about his ability to get creative with the salary cap but I suppose there are other people he can bring in to help with that stuff.

Ummm, who else?

I don't really have much in the way of preference. I just want a basketball man that has the authority to make moves as he sees fit.

i'm gonna agree with kiki or jvg

i don't know how well jvg would make the jump from coach to gm but he really does seem to know the game and that's such a big part of it

I definitely think Kiki & JVG should be on the list. Has anyone noticed that at least 12 of the current GM's are ex-NBA players?

Walsh is definitely my first choice...in part because if the Bucks got him you'd know that he would be calling the shots...otherwise he wouldn't be here in the first place.

I wouldn't be totally opposed to Collins...he's not a moron, but he was never very convincing as a coach. Whether he'd be better at running a team I'm not sure. The fact that Herb has wanted to get him for so long suggests HK would allow him to do what he wants though, which is a good thing.

JVG is an interesting one...I have always liked him as a guy, he seems very principled and certainly his emphasis on defense is a positive. No-nonsense type which would be nice to have in a GM. Not sure if we can mess around with a first-time GM though, and there would always be the questions about whether he'd want to take over the coaching job as well.

Another name to keep in mind is Dennis Lindsay who is R.C. Bufords assistant in San Antonio.

i'd be willing to give him a shot

the thing that i don't like about jvg is how he runs his offenses as coach, and presumably, if he's allowed to pick his coach, he'll look for someone to do it similarly

while I like the sound of Kenny Smith, he has no experience outside of playing and broadcasting. The last thing we need here is another novice that Kohl and his drones can control. If we can't get Walsh, which sounds like an outside chance, I'd be fine with Collins as GM and JVG as coach.

That is the truth though

It's great that Simmons has jumped on board with us in search of better leadership for our franchise.

But if anyone seriously thinks he could come in a do a good job or that the Senator would think about hiring him for a second, they are delusional.

I have mixed feelings about JVG

Bogut would absolutely love the guy

Mo might have to be traded (although Rafer did change his game under JVG so there may be hope)

His offense is extremely boring and so is his brand of basketball.

The only time this team (current personnel wise) has ever won was by outscoring opponents.

I think we need Donnie Walsh

I did appreciate Kohl mentioning bringing in someone with experience and a track record of success.

Donnie Walsh fits the bill, but will be come here?

And how serious is Kohl about paying what it takes to get him here and giving him the power once he is here?

Those are two very important issues.
