I am really not trying to come off as a hater, but CP3 is the most overrated defender on this board with out a doubt.
There are so many people who claim Paul's defense is what separates him from the rest of the PG's in the league and that's simply not true.
He is the Amare Stoudamire of PG's on the defensive end. People see his steal numbers and think he's some harassing defender. Wrong, he has both David West and Tyson Chandler behind him blocking shots so he has the liberty of playing the passing lanes.
He is a matador, he will front a player, but when the drives start coming he does nothing to stop them. He doesn't draw a lot of charges and he doesn't foul particularly well, both of those are because of his size.
He also gets posted up pretty regularly and does nothing to keep his player out of position or to make it hard for them when he is down there.

Yeah, he gets away with them; hence playing great D.The Next Big Thing wrote:People may disagree with me, but I think Bruce Bowen is over-rated as well. He's not a bad defender, but he's not the defender everyone makes him out to be. The only reason he looks so good is because his "defense" is usually made up of grabs and trips and other sorts of stuff that never gets called.

I can understand ppl saying that Baron's D is overrated, but htf is Jax overrated? He's truly a good defender. Just ask Dirk and every star he has faced. Heck, even TD and the Spurs acknowledged his D ability from back in his Spur days.
As for Amare, casual fans (aka non-realgmers) think he's a great/elite d player because they see his blocks on ESPN and his block stats, kinda like Hughes and steals. Amare is a sh*t defender though.

I never said Captain Jack was not a good defender. Often people make him out to be DPOY /lock down guy.

I don't, hopefully he meets CP3 IN The playoffs and shut him down so people stop this crazy talk.about him being overrated on defense, if anything hes underrated.

Must be true, if it's a rumor you read on Hoopshype.

Captain Jack IS a lockdown defender. Just watch the DAL series. Or how he locked down TMac, Marion, Artest, Kobe, etc this year. Plus, his +-FG% is higher than every other elite defender.

Last year was a reputation vote, but he's been very good this season. At least his impact on the Laker defense is indisputable this season.
Agreed. While I think Kobe has been substantially overrated on defense for a good portion of his career, I think he's done a fabulous job this year. He's playing just about as well as he did during the 3-peat.
As for overrated...the two names that come to mind are Camby and Bell.
Camby puts up great numbers, but I rarely see him make the overall, possession-by-possession impact that truly great defenders like Duncan and Garnett do. It's a shame neither of them have won the DPOY, because Camby isn't in either player's galaxy in terms of anchoring a defense.
As for Bell, I give him credit. He tries hard and he's got an all-world scowl. That's about it. If the Suns let Bell play Kobe straight up and not shade him with an extra defender or two, there wouldn't be anything left but a grease spot. He reminds me of Doug Christie -- great rep, but the actual execution leaves a lot to be desired.
Regarding Bruce Bowen...as much as I dislike all the cowardly crap he does off the ball -- stepping under jump shooters, swiping at players' feet while they're in the air, the well-timed psuedo-elbows -- I have to give him credit. He defends Kobe just as well as a single defender can be expected. It's ugly, and he gets away with a lot, but there's definitely an art to what he does. If he is indeed slipping, it's only due to the fact that he's on the wrong side of 35.
Somebody that might be flying under the radar, but is a lot better than you'd expect, is Paul Pierce. I've always stereotyped him as a mediocre defender because of his offensive skills, but he has impressed me every time I've watched this season. I took special care to observe him the other night at the Celtics-Spurs game, and I counted three different instances where he forced a difficult jumper after being isolated on either Parker or Ginobili. I'd definitely give him a second-team vote if I had one.

Yeah, Tyson Chandler(1.0) and David West(1.2) sure have some huge block numbers

People really overrate how good Chandler is at anchoring a D, West and Chandler are good man defenders, but neither are really good on help D, David gets literally all his blocks on man, and Tyson is a marginally better defender.
Not to mention he plays big minutes next to Mo-Pete and Peja, two poor defenders.
Keep believing whatever you want, but if he were such a sieve, we'd get burnt for easy buckets all game, and be out of the playoff picture.
Paul rips his man WAY more than he jumps a pass, or he jumps full court passes. If the Hornets have so many guys blowing past Chris and getting into the lane, you would think Chandler and West would have more than 2.2 combined blocks right?
If you want to make yourself believe that Chris' defensive rating is 7 points better than your boys because of a combined 2.2 blocks from the front court, go right ahead.

I know, he locked down Chris the other day (37/13) and he took advantage of Chris' matador D, and gambles by going 0-6, for 0 points on the night.
