Sam Cassell's playing style

I don't mean to nitpick, since we're playing so well, but just wanted to see what your thoughts were. I can see what Cassell can bring to the team, as a veteran PG that can run the offense, make open shots, etc. However, I feel like when Sam's in there, the ball's been sticking to him a little too much and in a way stagnates the offense. Do we really need to have Cassell hold the ball, going through his entire offensive repertoire, while everyone else stands around?

He reminds me of Gary Payton when we had him during the 04-05 season.

I'd rather have him holding on to the ball a little too long than throwing it away because he doesn't know the offense.

Give Sam some time. It's not like we're losing games because of him. Yeah, he's a vet and should know everything, but he's not familiar with all the players yet. He has made some excellent assists to KG, though.

I think that it's mostly due to two factors that Sam has been somewhat of a ball stopper lately. One, the guy doesn't know the plays. Two, he's the type of guy who likes to pound the ball and bit and he's coming from a team where he was allowed to do so. In sum, Sam is in an adjustment period with this team. In the future I can envision Sam bringing a critical element to this team.

Yes, sometimes he dominates the ball to much and looks for his own shot. But when he is in with the second team I think he needs to do that, since he is practically the only one who can create his own offense off the bench.

The most important thing however is that when Rondo is on the bench we have a PG on the floor who is in real control of the situation. When House and Tony were PG`s I held my breath every time they were pressured but now I feel our second unit is much more stable and organized.

I don't think it'll be an issue; remember, Cassell was a pretty fluid player on the 03-04 Wolves and that wasn't a major issue for them. Granted, he had a broader offensive role but the Celtics technically ARE looking for some bench spark and he IS a good playmaker and mid-range scorer. He just needs time to adjust to the offense, as others have been saying, and likewise for the offense to adjust to him because he has some skills that he brings to the table that open up new options.

Plus, he's got some synergy with KG that is hard to miss.

I like the way he dribbles forward with the big three out there and move backward to get himself open. Rondo must go forward all way because the opponents know he is not looking to shoot.

Cassell slows the ball because when he gets it he is seeing if he has a move he can make. He is reading the defense. That's what happen with this kind of player.
