Theres a couple of thoughts on this. 1st the deal will screw up the cap room to sign up a free agent. 2nd Would Marion be the guy we would be looking for over a free agent?

I Don't see us giving up Joel in the trade, he's the perfect backup to Oden. You included outlaw also and still have him on the roster.

Marion and Aldridge would fit well together I think. Looks real good for the blazers, but I don't think Miami would want to trade Marion just for the #12 pick unless there is somebody they really want who dropped down.

If Blazers want Marion, they will just sign him as a FA in 2009. As for Blount and Banks, there is no chance we would take either of those players unless they came in a package with Wade.

+1.

Besides, regardless of whether or not Marion opts out this year, we can't trade our 08 pick for him.

I like Marion and I think he could be a great fit in Portland from a talent perspective, but if the Blazers want him, they'd be better off just trying to sign him as a FA rather than overpay Pat Riley for him.

Yeah I forgot to take Outlaw out.

Joel, Outlaw, Sergio & the pick contract is no difference with Banks & Blount. The Blazers wants to sign a free agent in '09 but your team is due to give extension to Webster & Frye which I doubt you can give a max money to a FA. Besides why wait for that year if you guys can have Marion. I believe Marion is the piece that can complement your young guys and to make the playoffs.

Joel is the better back up but I believe 15 mins of playing time as a back-up will not affect much, and besides that is one of the catch that is why we are trading Blount for him despite he has 1 more year compare to Blount's contract.

1st of, I think your pick will be the #13 unless you guys win the lottery.

Miami will consider trading Marion for expirings and a young player. Riley already said that he wants his team to be competitive next season while keeping a salary flexibility. Riles likes to keep our cap space in 2009. He prefers to sign a post player for the money Marion will earn. Every successful Riley coach team, there is always a post player. I'm sure he likes Oden and Aldridge but I'm sure the Blazer won't trade them.

Since the Heat are clearly thinking about salary cap space, Marion can be had easy in 2009 for nothing but money. No way Blazers need to trade Outlaw and a lottery pick, and take a bunch of crap contracts.

Hey Hoops23, can you offer a better deal than Blazers just signing Marion as FA in 2009 and giving the Heat nothing.

I'd really like to see the Blazers start a SF who can be a shut down defender and help supplement LMA's rebounding. Because LMA will inevitable play away from the basket and shoot jumpers, the help at rebounding from the 3 would be very helpful. In addition, it'd be very, very helpful if the SF could knock down 3's enough to help keep the defense honest.

Marion can do all of those things. The problem is that the Blazers will eventually need to max out Roy, LMA, and Oden, with larger contracts for several other players. Can Webster grow into that role? I don't know. Marion wanted to be the Man, maybe after a minute in Miami, he'd be ready to be a key part of a winning team again.

OK, in 2009, Blazers will sign Marion and the Heat can have Frye and Webster. That's a deal.

Are you guys going to let go Webster, Jack and Frye?

How much do you think the Blazer's cap space in 2009?

Blazers cap space in 2009 will be around $33 million. We don't know which young player will be kept but certainly not all of them. In the mean time, we will not give any of them away.

Jack is almost gone. He wont be back next year. I dont see Webster getting enough money to mess up our chance at a FA next summer if Darius Miles does in fact retire. If you want Raef, Jack, and Webster for Marion, that could work, but thats probably the only way Marion comes to Portland THIS summer

Neither Jack or Frye is that valueable to portland so I don't really see contracts going out to them. IMO at this point Webster is a maybe depending on where his game improves next season. Barring a big step next season (which would then negate a need to get a SF) I don't see the blazer shelling out that much to keep him.

if webster is still a blazer on his current contract next seaon and takes a big step forward, portland may be in a bind. Webster will be RFA with an 11.3 million dollar cap-hold. If he wants to test the free agent market, and portland had plans for cap-space, then they'd have no choice but to renounce their bird rights to him.

I don't see how the Blazers would be in a bind. Blazers could renounce Webster than later reclaim his bird rights. If Webster is a viable FA option, Blazers will be in better position to sign him than any other team.

Marion is going to be 30 in 2 months.

And he relies on his athleticism. Those kinds of players are not good risks. He is still a great player, but his decline is coming soon and it could be very fast. So he is not worth giving up a lot to get him for a very young team.

There are a lot better fits for Marion.

I don't believe 30 is too old for this team. The Blazers will be a playoff team next year and it

This is an interesting proposal but in this scenario, Marion will most likely sign a long term deal this summer (S & T) and I'm not sure how willing I'd be to have Marion once he's locked up in a long-term deal. In addition, he clearly wouldn't fit into the long-term plans for the Blazers since he is 30, and I don't think I'd be willing to give up Outlaw and the pick, that could be instead packaged together (or apart) for a player that fits the LONG-TERM needs of the Blazers (PG and SF). It's a more than fair offer but I still say no.

Good point, he'll still be in his prime for another couple of seasons....I wouldn't want to be paying him big money after that.
