Where has Troy Murphy been?

Post#1 » by Miller4ever » Mon Mar 24, 2008 2:01 am

I think the rookie Troy Murphy has come back, and it's making me smile. What has caused this wonderful resurgence? He's been instrumental in our recent surge.

It seems like he's just getting back into a natural rhythm with the consistent increase in minutes with JO out. We're not forcing him to play center right now, and he's actually able to play his natural game.

I think he's doing a good job of showing that he can still produce if you simply allow him to do what he's actually good at. If you try and force him into your idea of what a center should be, he's not going to succeed. I think he's proving that, while he might not be completely worth the amount of money he's signed for, he's not a completely horrible contract when properly used.

Even with Troy's great play lately it is hard to justify his contract. Also, for as good as he has been on offense he is a huge liability on defense. He is just very, very slow in terms of moving his feet.

That said he has been playing very well lately. When his offense is flowing, like it has been he should get a lot of minutes on the court. I think he is a tough guy and has nice touch, I like him as a player, don't get me wrong, but it we could cut his salary I would in a heartbeat despite his good play recently.

Oh he doesnt justify his contract, but we are stuck with him for better or for worse. In that event, if he is putting up double-doubles, its a lot easier to swallow 10 million a year than if he were pulling 11 point 6 rebound games. He has been a pleasant surprise lately, I hope he can carry some of his recent momentum into next season.

I love Troy Murphy. I really don't want to trade him if all we get is expirings, he may not be worth his contract, but the way he has been playing his contract isn't awful. His defense isn't as bad as everyone seems to think, not saying hes Ben Wallace, but a big man hasn't gone off on us in a while, hes been outplaying them all, and getting them in foul trouble. Honestly, when JO comes back I think Murphy is going to be the perfect compliment to JO like we all thought he would be when we initially traded for him. I want him on this team for the future, he creates a lot of mismatches and fits in our offense better than any other 6'11 player would.

I like Troy too. He reminds me of Brad Miller, w/o the passing skills, but also w/o the injuries. His shot has been much better recently, and that can only help guys like Flip, Junior, and Danny on the drive. I would like to run more PickNRoll/Pops w/ Murph, especially if Flip continues to improve at the Point.

If JO stays next year, I'd like to see Obie incorporate something similar to that Sacto-Princeton offense that CWebb, Miller, & Divac ran so well a few years back. Jeff is an underrated passer, and both Junior & Danger can move w/o the ball well for either the catch-n-shoot or backdoor layup.

Good job, Troy... Keep it up!

P.S. Congrats to Indiana teams for making NCAA... None got to the S16, but at least we were represented well. Tough losses all the way around. Go Memphis!

Memphis better learn how to make free throws...and fast. They are going to get booted by Michigan State if they shoot below 60% from the line again.
