Point guards on roller skates

Post#1 » by SuperDeluxe » Mon Mar 24, 2008 12:59 pm

I wasn't too happy about learning that our own Rajon Rondo is a huge fan of roller skating (during the offseason, he skates three times a week, and on Fridays prefers to go skating rather than going to a nightclub).

Now, if you found Rondo's article a bit disturbing, try watching this.

NECN did a video on this a few weeks ago. I assumed he started when he was a kid and has done it ever since. Then I read this article, and it sais he started 2 years ago and got his "tricks" from ATL

Hey man, whatever floats your boat. I'd much rather have him kicking it a the roller rink on a Friday night than mixing it up in the clubs. He seems like a good kid.

right

im at the point where i no longer feel compelled to go out and drink myself silly just because (and though its still my favorite way to spend a night) im a more responsible and productive person for it.

keep in mind that a lot of nba players do go out more than is conducive to them playing their best, and even paul pierce has had to tame his night life. so props to rondo for finding better ways to spend his time earlier in life than his thirties.

very highschoolish original post actually (oh my god i cant believe that he does his own thing and doesnt just want to conform)

You misunderstood my point. You can get all sorts of injuries roller skating, especially to the knees and ankles (even with boot-type roller skates). Not sure if you read the article or not, but Danny Ainge wasn't too happy either.

Baron Davis does this too. There was a pretty interesting, really professional looking video of him doing it while playing ball posted on truehoop not too long ago.

Balance, rhythm, fluidity, footwork. If anything roller skating probably makes his ankles and legs stronger, safer. And he already has some huge freaking feet compared to his center of gravity. I wouldn't worry at all (knock on wood).

"I'm the best skater in the [NBA]," Rondo said. "I don't know who's good, but I'm the best skater in the league."

No way does this make him stronger. All does is open himself up to injury. Roger clemens, when he played for the red sox there was a list on activities he couldn't part take in. One I remember was volleyball.

Rondo shouldn't be able to skate.

A, He could get hurt.

B, It is just frickn weird.

He could get hurt doing any number of things, like, say, driving to the grocery store or dancing or lifting weights. Lifting weights in particular can be a dangerous thing for tendons etc. and yet it also makes one stronger. I really hope you're kidding when you say serious roller skating doesn't strengthen the feet, ankles, knees, legs as a whole.

B, It is just frickn weird.

That is irrational. By your argument a sky diver could kill him while he was just walking down the street. When you are roller skating you are taking a much greater risk to hurt anckles, knees and wrists then driving a car. Come one man seriously.

Um...no. Driving a car is one of the more dangerous things human beings do on a regular basis. If I were Danny Ainge, there are about 50 streets in the Boston area I would forbid players from travelling on. I would rather have Rondo attempt a triple lutz on roller skates than drive (or even get a ride from somebody) on the J-Way, example.

And what do you not understand about the way that mastering something like roller skates will increase balance, increase flexibility, increase leg/knee/ankle strength...things which will help somebody in all aspects of life including basketball: 1 - fall less often, 2 - fall more safely, 3 - limit damage from a fall.

What don't you understand to gain corrdination and flexibility you don't have to do something risky such as, rollerskating. Don't get testy. I can't beleive you think driving a car puts him at agreater risk than this rollerskating nonsense. It is just stupid. If he is sitting in April or May beause of his rollerskating the team might not win. When was the last time an NBA player missed a game because they were hurt in a car accident. Please don't came back with, when was the last time someone got hurt rollerskating. Weak.

well i bet roller skating is a great way to work out his footwork. sort of like how hakeem was so dominant because of playing soccer when he was a kid. roller skating worked wonders with baron davis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDlaVqVz17g

"Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, and Mike..."

Really cool as a short film, she should work with Rondo.
