It's kinda interesting what's the expectation from him, is it just to clean up the mess? in 2 years most of the garbage on their roster would be gone, and they would be left with more friendly contracts and players (that of course if Isiah was banned from pulling more comedies), they wouldn't need him to do that, if it's building for something in the future then why him? why not try for a younger figure ala Dumars or Paxson?
Anyway, the move was needed long ago, Isiah shouldn't have been allowed to create a bigger mess in the past off season.

I still can't figure out why he hasn't been fired. I mean, they could take anybody from RealGm and let them coach and they couldn't do any worse.
Because he signed a 4 year $24 million extension this time last year.
Also, because this is Dolan, you know there's something ridiculous involved here - like Walsh is GM, but Zeke's still President of basketball operations or head drafter or permanent coach or something else guaranteed to cause tension. It would be way too simple for Dolan to just put a smart, proven capable guy in charge of everything and let him make his own decisions.

So Pacer fans are idiots?
I actually do blame donnie for a lot of what has happened. At the very least, he hand-picked Larry to be his successor. So if Larry doesn't pan out that reflects poorly on Walsh, no?
Walsh says that he made the GSW deal (Dunleavy, Murphy/SJax, Harrington) from last season so thats on him. After Bird left coaching, Bird advocated for Rick Carlisle to be hired but Donnie hired Isiah.
Bird was just given the keys to the kingdom (so-to-speak) at the end of last season. But when he was hired, what was the first thing he did? Fire Isiah and hire Rick Carlisle. Not a bad first move.
He signed Sarunas -- major bust.
He drafted Danny Granger and Shawne Williams. Other than Williams' legal issues both have been very nice picks (especially Danny).
Then, in his first act without the Walsh/Bird two-headed monster, he hired Jim O'Brien, and given our **** cap situation signed Travis Diener, Kareem Rush, Andre Owens, Stephen Graham and Flip Murray. All of those guys have been fairly solid backups. The problem is -- the Pacers can only seem to sign backups given our cap.
Donnie signed Jermaine, Donnie signed Tinsley (rumors indicate Bird has wanted to trade Tinsley but Donnie has blocked those efforts), Donnie signed Jonathan Bender, Donnie signed Austin Croshere, Donnie let Isiah draft Fred Jones over the Donnie's choice of Tayshaun Prince (oh what could have been had he never been able to block Reggie's layup

This isn't meant to be a "I hate Donnie Walsh" post...
In fact, I respect Donnie quite a bit and thank him for the teams he built in Indiana. My point however is that Bird has made very few moves out of the two-headed monster issue the Pacers front office had embraced for years. The few moves he's made haven't been terrible. But to say that Bird is soley responsible for the Pacers state is absurd. Donnie has had a bigger role than you give him credit for.
I don't know what will happen -- whether Bird will prove people wrong or be a remarkable bust. In fact, I would have preferred a clean sweep and bringing in someone new. But now the Pacers get to find out whether Bird is more like McHale or Ainge. Sigh...

Isiah seems to think that Walsh was brought in to help him. Otherwise why would he be praising a guy who is being given the same title he currently has. Does he think they'll be co-presidents of basketball operations?

It could be that Isiah might look at this as a Larry Bird Mentorship situation. Or that he feels that Donnie wanted Isiah there but it was Larry that forced him out of Indiana.
It actually is fairly odd all around (the timing and such for both announcements). I thought this column was somewhat interesting
Getting Walsh is no Garden party
I personally think Donnie running the Knicks would be a good thing for the NBA and the Knicks but I can understand wanting a heavy-hitter like Colangelo or West more.

Don't just give away how many years you've been watching basketball. (which is about 3) You have no clue what you are talking about.
BTW the only way to "rebuild" the knicks is to cut everybody sign NBDL 2nd stringers and take 3-4 10 wins seasons until they are out of cap hell. Then start over with a few top 5 picks and almost $0.00 on the cap.
