Could Cuban Fire Avery Johnson?
March 25, 2008 - 5:16 pm
The Star-Telegram -
With Dirk Nowitzki out indefinitely because of sprains to both his knee and ankle, the Mavericks could find themselves in the lottery this offseason.

The Star-Telegram is wondering whether their failure to even make the postseason would force team owner Mark Cuban to fire head coach Avery Johnson.

Johnson has three years remaining on his current contract with Dallas, something that wouldn't keep Cuban from simply buying the coach on. [READ]

Anyone who has seen the death stares from Cuban towards Avery knew that there is a possibility of it happening, but that is a very very slim possibility.

If he was going to fire him, he should have done it while we still had Hassell, Harris & Diop.

Now there's no point unless he just wants to waste the buyout money. Or unless Coach K decides to go pro.

He's waiting, I can tell... But he's getting more p*ssed with every loss especially when they are as disappointing as some have been.
If we could just close games with Luka, Kyrie, Green, Maxi, and Wood that'd be great...

If he does, we'll have Avery in Charlotte and you can have Sam Vincent back!!

No thanks. Give us Gerald Wallace or Emeka instead.

Cuban's choices:

1: Admit he made a stupid trade to bring in Kidd

or

2: Blame Avery for not using Kidd properly and fire him

I think Avery will land on his feet. The Mavs are in for a really ugly rebuilding period. There are much better places to be over the next 5 years.

I don't support showing Avery the door. I do hope we can make a couple trades to add some true depth to our bench and size. I would love for us to go younger instead of adding older players that aren't able to offer much to us.

Avery also got outcoached twice in two historical embarassing playoffs. Or should we blame Dirk for not being able to hit all his shots when double-teamed constantly?

I could care less about our regular season record with Avery, fact is, he has a poor playoff record. And this team is not going anywhere with Avery as the coach and all the old spares that he has lobbied for instead of developing young talent. Too bad, all the other teams in the West not only have significantly better coaches who can make adjustments and are not out-coached by the national tv commentators during games, but also have a young developing core.

I somewhat agree with this. However, instead of simply getting younger, I would rather see upgrade of talent or more suitable players to play with Kidd.

Leave a window of 2 years and do whatever it takes to upgrade the talent this offseason. If Avery can't lead us to a championship or at least damn close the first year, then fire him and Donnie and then bring in Larry Brown to take over this team.
After 2 years, bust this team up and start from scratch.

Avery should be shown the door, but I respect what h did for this team, getting us to a point where we have never been

However,

I think he has lost this team with his hard-headed style. Coaches like that do not last long. Plus being a control freak doesn't help.

^I agree. I will give credit to Avery for squeezing what he did out of this team (but let's be serious, he inherited a very talented team primed for a strong playoff push). But it's obvious his time is done. The roster also needs major re-tooling, all the vets Avery brought in for "leadership" are scrubs that contribute nothing.

1 bad season? The Mavs aren't even having a bad season. It's not great, but it's not a bad season by any means. The West is just ridiculous and Dirk got hurt now.

I understand when things go sour fans want to blame their coach, but I don't understand this. Good luck finding a better coach if Avery goes, that might not be as easy as some people think.

He's made mistakes like against Nelly last post-season, but a lot of coaches make mistakes. Avery won't have a problem getting another gig. Dallas would have a problem finding a better coach.
