Is Webber a HOFer?

Post#1 » by TMU » Wed Mar 26, 2008 2:24 am

And how would you describe his career?
A series of bad luck? Was never an outstanding player? A choke artist?

EDIT: I personally believe he's one of the greatest PFs to play the game, and should rightfully enter the HOF, but I just want to hear what you have to say.

Yes. Because of his later years, I think most of us have forgotten just how incredible he was throughout the majority of his career and especially in his prime. The man was a machine and one of the greatest power forwards of all-time.

Surprising how many people have already said yes. He was a good player, sometimes a very good player. But at no point in his career did he reach a point where it was greatness. There is no way he's a hall of famer. That's an insult to the all-time greats that are in the hall.

He should make it IMO although there are some guys I'd like to see get in before he does (Artis, King, Dantley)

It's a basketball hall of fame, not an NBA hall of fame, so there are definitely some names in there some people may not have heard of.

But as far as the NBA players in the HoF goes, I'd say more than 90% are worthy of being there.

Webber's peak was just too short lived. It was a swift drop off. No gradual decline. Even when he was at his absolute best, he would've had to maintain that for at least 8 seasons to be considered a great.

Webber's a HoFer, yeah. He was an outstanding player and it's only late in his career on his decline that people are thinking about if you DON'T think he's a HoFer.

One of the greatest big passers the game has ever seen, a dynamic (if soft) scorer, a good rebounder, on some really fantastic teams...

I'm thinking about his entire career, and I don't think he deserves to be in the HoF. There was that period in the late 90's and early 2000's when the West was dominated by the elite power forwards: Malone, Duncan, Webber, Sheed, KG, Dirk, McDyess.

If you were playing a playoff team in the West, you were most likely going to go up against one of the best 4's in the league. And Webber was most definitely considered one of the elite for a few seasons. I just don't feel like he was elite for a long enough time to be considered an all-time great.

I also don't think he was a soft scorer. At least not in his prime. When he was at his best he was a power player who could occasionally knock down the midrange shot. But he was primarily a power scorer in his prime. He had the strength and athleticism to finish around the basket with the best of them. But again, his prime was just too short-lived. He became mostly a jump shooter after he lost his explosion.

I think some people forget there is no NBA hall of fame, but just Basketball Hall of Fame. So if you combine his college plus his pro game hes a HOF
