How would you fix the NBA officiating?

Post#1 » by aikgtd » Wed Mar 26, 2008 3:03 am

After seeing the 'Official NBA Referee "Bashing" Thread' I thought to myself...If were the commissioner, how would I fix the officiating? I then thought it would be better to see what others would do. There have been discussions in the past about possible putting in a instant replay, adding additional referees, making stiffer requirements for officials (for instance, if you get x amount of calls wrong...you get 'suspended') you get my drift. So...Please kindly post what you would do to change the officiating in the NBA. Please do not 'bash' referees, complain about certain games, etc...I would like this to be a 'what would you do to change the officiating in the NBA' thread.

No late game calls unless it is REALLY obvious. Let the players win, not the whistles.

Who Wants to be a Millionare Style. Each coach has 3 lifelines - ask the audience, phone a friend, or 50/50. This would give home teams an advantage with the audience and would add some chance to the game in other areas. I don't see any flaws at all.

Each team captain picks a girl from the audience for which they are thrown into a mud wrestling match to determine the correct call.

Make it easier for them to officiate.

Assign technical fouls and fines on floppers. That will reduce the amount of flopping in the NBA, and make the game easier to officiate.

Make them more accountable, have them have to give interviews with the media like players and coaches do, and answer to questionable calls.

technical fouls and fines on flops is difficult though..I would make it a T and a fine for an OBVIOUS flop..for example, Raja Bell's sudden fall vs. the Spurs last year..top 3 flop of all-time..that should be a T and a flop..but Amare's flop vs. Dwight this year shouldn't have been a T or a fine, because Howard has his hands out, which gives Stoudemire an argument..it would have to be obvious..

I would also get handchecking back..and I would try to eliminate superstar calls when they are unnecessary, specifically on the offensive end..I can understand why Duncan or Kobe gets away with some physicality on the defensive end because of their reputation, but no need for touch fouls on the offensive end..a few perimeter players in particular, but I won't name names..
