OT: Buying Health Insurance

Post#1 » by Mags FTW » Tue Mar 25, 2008 8:03 am

Does anybody here buy their own health insurance? I currently have 2 jobs, 1 that pays the bills and 1 that provides me with health insurance. But I am fed up with the "insurance job" and want to quit and just buy my own insurance even if it means having less money to spend on important things like vodka and porn.

I'm a single guy in his late-20's who has never had any major surgeries/medical conditions/diseases/etc. Can anyone suggest a good company to buy insurance from and about how much a decent amount of coverage will cost? I know price depends on how big of a deductible I want, but just throw out some figure to give me a general idea.

Get married. With the Larry Harris hair cut it should be easy to pick the girl of your choosing.

I've never had to buy my own insurance, but I believe the UWM Alumni Association used to send me info on getting insurance thru them after I had graduated.

If you have graduated from UWM or MU or any college I would probably suggest checking that avenue out.

My work gets my health insurance through

They have many different plans and deductibles. I have a $1,000 deductible then they cover everything after that. For a family of 3, that is about $500 a month I believe. I'm sure a single plan would be less.

I had to purchase my own health insurance for the last decade until 2008, when my wife went to work for a place that offered it. It's brutal. Now I know that not many of you are anywhere close to my age or family situation but all I can tell you is I was paying around $1,500 per month for myself, my wife and 2 children and that was with a high deductible (basically a major medical policy).

Suggestions:

1.) You can check with your local Chamber of Commerce, as many of them have programs and some are quite good. There are some even cutting edge programs that have a self-insurance component to them offered by some Chambers.

2.) Get a different "insurance job."

Wow. I checked ehealthinsurance and I wouldn't even come close to that. The most expensive plan is $270.

What's a "good" deductable? I found this plan:

$153 per month

$500 deductible
$40 Brand Name Drug CoPay
Out-of-Network Coverage

I am an insurance broker that sells for all of the major health companies in the state. Give me a call and we can discuss the different plan options that are available to you. My office number is 262-784-7344 ext.15 and my name is Dave Borkowski.

When I was single awhile back in the 1990-92 period, I took a basic health policy out with a company out of Indiana called Golden Rule Insurance. You can find them on the web. They specialize in this type of stuff.

What I took out was a real basic policy that I think maybe cost me $250 for the year. High deductibles, etc. Essentially it covered me if I broke my leg, got cancer, etc.

Now this company has in the past had some issues with consumers claiming that they wouldn't pay claims. However, I did have one claim that went over my deductible and they did pay their share with no questions asked. For me it was a good experience for the time I had the policy.

I'm paying for a real crappy insurance because the program I go to requires it.The deductible is like 2000 dollars and I pay 68 a month for it. I really hope I never get injured or anything.

I wish I was in my moms plan, but since I'm not a full time student the insurance carrier/the place my mom works at won't take me. Her plan has everything...I'm not sure how much she pays though.

edit: And for what it's worth Mags, I applied for mine through ehealthinsurance also.

If any of you are dying and willing to relocate to NJ, I could probably hook you up with some charity palliative care. Just let me know.

Thanks, chure.

I'm up for a promotion at my "pays the bills" job that would give me insurance if I get it. I'll find out if within the next month. If things fall through I'll give you a call.
