The Sixers' finishing close games is essential to our success as a young upcoming team.

I would argue that finishig they way the Sixers have is more indicitive of an intentional thought process change that management and coaching have in terms of setting a culture around the team. For the team to buy into that, and then it be a quality that is noticed (probably admired and feared) by opponents speaks well to what is being built. I'd imagine that if the Sixers do well that they wouldn't have to so much ask for some players to come here, but players with solid character and work ethics will come here on the strength of that reputation.

Until we know what we obtain this summer, I don't think we can answer this but I'll give it a shot right now.

I think this Sixers' team will finish the season with 43 wins (7-4 the rest of the way). When consider the following factors...

1) The team didn't find it's rythem until after Feb 1st and was terrible for the first 3 months of the season

2) This is an extremely young team who's current roster will only get better as the players age and mature

3) The team should be able to obtain a starting quality PF this summer either via trade or free agency

... I believe that those three factors should enable this team to add 7 wins to their record next season which would make them a 50 win team.

A very good point. I recall that after AI was traded and Webber was bought out, there was a declaration by Billy King and Ed Snider that they were going to change the climate in the Sixers organization to that of players with solid character and defensive skills. It may very well be that drafting Thadeus Young was a conscious move in that direction. And as you say ... this team may now be attractive to other players of that nature.

The Sixers are starting to get more and more respect, but it seems that people either still have doubts or are just being careful with the Sixers. We have the second best record since the all star break and have beaten almost all the top teams in the league, yet no rankings I've seen have us breaking the top 10.

edit: Now that I think about it, maybe it's because the Sixers probably shouldn't be in the top 10 as those other teams up there are still better than the Sixers.

For a team like the SIxers, its better to be careful with your fan-expectations than to just jump out and proclaim a second coming of the greatest thing since sliced bread. Fans, and management, would do well to continue to just take things a bit at a time. Not looking at success as if it is something that should be shunned; but continuing to build a solid program that makes the success not to be a flash in teh pan (recent Chi. Bulls anyone?).

Or we can just enjoy the ride. Irrational exuberance is part of what is good about being a fan. Since we get so angry when our team dissapoints, why not get the most out of our new reason for hope.

I think everyone here knows all of the obvious flaws of the Sixers- which makes it even more impressive how they have turned the corner. We are still early in our rebuild, so there is a legit chance this can be the beginning of building something special.

I feel what you're saying, but the power rankings are given on a week by week basis. It doesn't matter how they played several months earlier or how they're projected to do a couple months later. That's all I was referring to when I was talking about the respect they're getting. Despite them playing very well the last couple months, they still aren't getting the respect right now for those last couple months. And like I said in my edit, there is a very good case that they shouldn't get any more respect than they already have (in terms of rankings, i.e. not being in the top 10).

Oh, I don't think there is any doubt that this team is on a realistic rise. The only thing that can derail it now would be to screw up the "team" concept. It isn't likely to happen but getting the wrong player or head coach can do that.
