While I agree with his pros, I'd still rather keep Sasha. Sasha's D is way way better than JCN's, and with Fish and Farmar his shooting abilities really wouldn't be that much of a benefit for this team. This team needs better D, not another shooter.Air Bryant wrote:-= original quote snipped =-
I agree. I was watching him for years in Europe and he was deadly, has no fear and is not afraid of taking responsibility in the last moments of the game. We all know that everybody has eyes on Kobe and that he can not save us every time. I take him over Sasha anytime and I'm from Slovenia.
JC Navarro.

I used to want Navarro, but the way Sasha is playing, why fix what isn't broken? If we can't resign Sasha, then let's consider Navarro, since he's not really earning himself a big contract offer next season, with the impact he's been bringing to the floor.
Now, if Navarro is willing to come super cheap and not complain about riding the bench while he competes for minutes, then I wouldn't mind having him as a 3rd string combo guard at both the 1 and 2, even if we keep Sasha, but it also depends on whether Sun Yue is joining the team next season, of which I don't see any reason why he shouldn't.

Sasha Vujacic
Age: 24 this month
PER 15.17
fg% 46.2
3pt% 43.5
efg% 57.6
Juan Carlos Navarro
Age: 28 in June
PER 12.22
fg% 40.7
3pt% 37.3
efg% 50.9
Considering that Vujacic also has a better assist to turnover ratio, a better rebounding rate, steals the ball more, and is a better on the ball defender, I can't think of one thing Navarro can do better than Vujacic. Even in potential, Vujacic has him beat as he's four years younger.
Fearlessness? Are you kidding me? Vujacic is a machine, machines don't fear, they hit clutch shots like he did last night.
And of course Navarro right now is better than Coby Karl, who freshly turned 21 this month. But why would the Lakers give up Coby Karl when he has potential to provide something unique? He has size, strength, toughness, defensive hustle, a good stroke and a crisp, accurate pass, seemingly all the tools to be very successful on our team.
You don't give all that up for redundancy, a worse one at that. We have plenty of 3-point shooters who'll jack it up, better shooters at that.

JCN has something few players on our team has though. Experience. He's a vet who would help us in the locker room and on the practice floor I'm pretty sure. If he would accept a reduced role here, I'd be all for signing him.
I would like to see who else is out there on the market though, because I think we can get someone worth more than MLE with our MLE now that our roster is as strong as it is. I'd look up guys like Artest first and foremost just in case he's crazy enough to take the MLE.

Cut Coby Karl? The guy has talent, if there's anyone one the Lakers team that I'd consider cutting it would be Luke.[/quote]
While I agree with you we would suffer the wrath of "BIG BILL WALTON" and probably have all kinds of injured feet throughout our locker room. Not to mention we would no longer be blessed with any more of the infamous "Thow it down big man" and homerism that BBW bestows upon us.

There's two big differences between them, first that this is JCN first year in NBA, and first year usually is to adapt to the league mostly for international players, and second that one is playing for the Lakers and the other one in the Grizzlies... i think that since the first big game of Navarro in the league when he scored like 7 threes he didnt have a single wide open shoot while Sasha has some every game.
JCN has a lot of more talent than Vujacic, there's no doubt about that, anyone that had the chance to see Navarro in Europe or with Spanish national team knows what he's able to do, he can win games, Sasha, as long as i love him, cant.
Sometimes, i'd say most of times, stats are not all for a basketball player.

Good point. I don't care what the boxscore says. There's much more to the game than stats. Not trying to take anything away from Vujacic, but if I have to choose between the two, I don't have to think twice. Navarro is the clear choice here. He has a very high basketball I.Q. and that's something we can use late in the games.

Right, gotta love the intangibles.
After all, that's why Fish is here right? All that experience and intangibles? Or are people still down on Fish?
He still can't finish or defend quick guards, and he can go through shooting droughts for weeks. Yes he has experience, yes Fish brings leadership, but our team also needs somebody who can bring talent, skills - the tangibles.
For a team that relies too much on three-point shooting, let's get another 3-point shooter with few other skills. Navarro is small, gets picked off by screens like a fly, doesn't have any strength to play defense especially on a switch, unremarkable passer, ballhandler, has little driving game.
Even what Navarro does well, shoot off the dribble, isn't well-suited for our offense, which relies on setting up at certain positions on the floor, passing, cutting, and spot-up shooting. He can get hot, but so can every shooter on our team. Navarro sure as hell won't get into rhythm by doing his running jumpers or he's going to find himself on the bench or kobe in his ear.
Navarro has Kobe's penchant for frequent heat checks, Fish's inconsistency, Farmar's small size, Vujacic's one-dimensional offensive game. He solves none of our problems, only exacerbates them, all in one package.
First give me a guy who won't be a liability in so many areas, then let's talk about experience and intangibles.

At least 8 full games. Aside from the couple times the Lakers already played them, there are a few teams that I also follow regularly (which I won't mention here) who played the grizz as well.
And of course, I do my usual flipping of the channels on league pass to catch a few minutes here and there of a lot of games.
If anybody has any better observations, I'll be glad to hear it, because I have yet to see, hear or read anything substantial about Navarro that'll really help our team.
Perhaps there's some of you out there who watch every Grizz game who can give a better assessment of Navarro's abilities. As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing about him that makes me want to watch him more.

Yeah, most of Grizzlies games plus the worth 8 seasons he has been playing in Spain is a lot of games watching him, the only observation i can add is the one i've already said, he has that natural talent to play the ball, thats not in the stats, its not even an intangible, its just talent, he can score a final possesion (all right he wouldnt have any playing here), he can score a three with a guy up on him, he can penetrate, he can pass the ball, he's just better than sasha... yeah he sux in defense and thats prolly the reason i dont think we really need him since our perimeter defense is already poor, but doubting he's way better than the machine? No way.
