Will Yi be a bust?
In honor of some classic Midranger threads, I've got to ask this one.
Do you think Yi will be a bust?
Yes, I'm the waffle-man....and will be very happy if Yi really plays well next year. But aren't you guys getting seriously troubled that Yi's game is apparently so affected by his "mental" or "physical" exhaustion?
Don't guys who become all-stars possess some level of significant physical skill that would allow them to at least put up a 15 rebound game or shoot 10-14 and score 23-25 points at some point during the garbage time here in the second half of the season?
I'm starting to get a bad Darko vibe here. Cast your vote and talk me off the ledge in your reply. Tell me this is all related to the bad players and coaches around him. I'm just struggling to see how that factor prevents him from getting some rebounds and making some dunks in a game like tonight or against a bunch of NBDL players with Miami the night prior.

It is a good thread if we can keep the trolls out though. I went with bust because I believe he is older than 20 and when you're that weak you're just not going to be successful.

Only I'm allowed to waffle........

Since the season's over and the board is dead, I just want to provoke some discussion. See what people think. I just can't recall a rookie going into a tailspin so badly like this.
Bernman is allowed to make his statements. He was one of the guys dead set against Yi and for Brandan Wright.
St. Nick can vote but I don't want him trolling. We understand the position of the Golden State guys.....they can have their own discussion of this thread on the GS board.

FYI, I think the realistic concern is that he's 23, not 24.
I voted for the middle option...but if he's not 15/8 next year I don't see that as automatically making him a bust. If he was 15/8 by year three that would seem about right. Not earth-shattering for a sixth pick but perfectly respectable.

See I think he should of been a 2nd/late 1st round pick TBH. He's a project, from a league that is probalby the 4th or 5th tier of pro ball. (NBA-> Europe-> NCAA -> South America -> China). It's painfully obvious that he is physically unprepared. I think he has the skillset to be succesful, but to get to where he needs to be physically will take all of his rookie contract. 3years I think, 2 years to bulk up and 1 year to adjust physically. I think we get a better idea by mid next season because I don't think he's 19. he team situation he's been dropped in hasn't been the best either but IMO that's his fault too. He should've been brought along and nurtured raher than being promised minutes.
Be a decent player with maybe one or two earned ASG appearances. But not MVP candidate or perennial all star

I'm one of the people who assumes he's 23, but I do suggest you change the third option to 23 because all the "evidence" is that he's either 23 or 20. Saying he's 24 just spreads disinformation IMO.

The simple truth is that this team has several players whose style just isn't conducive to making other players better. Until we get a guard in here who will run the offense, be a leader, give consistent (night in, night out) opportunities to the young guys throughout the game, nothing much is going to happen in terms of development. A lot of that again has to do with the organization and their direction. By abandoning the clearly laughable attempt to 'win now' and letting Bogut, Yi, new pick, and CV (if he's around) get the bulk of opportunities next year, I'd say that would do wonders for their progression. Let them learn on the fly. Another year of Redd (17.9 shots per game) and Mo (14.3) getting theirs before everyone else has done nothing in terms of producing wins (24!) or developing players. Thank goodness Bogut showed some great progress this year, otherwise our cupboard would be absolutely bare right now.
As for the vote, I went for 10/5 bench player based off his season's progression and what he's in store for this summer. It sucks that he'll be absolutely dead tired next fall when it's time to report for camp.

FAM...changes noted and made. I didn't know anyone had an offical older age listed, but I now see that DraftExpress.com lists it as 10/28/84. So he'll be 24 when he starts up next season if you believe that source.
For this season at least, the DX profile from last summer seems spot on:

Why? The new GM is going to have to make some decisions here in 60-days....and whether to trade the guy or whether we need another PF via draft or trade next year as insurance in case this guy busts.
I just don't want our board to go into Darko denial like the Pistons board did for two-years. I think we've got to discuss and debate the issue. I'm amazed so many guys are voting for the 10/5 option. That's news in and of itself IMO.

If this team had 50 wins right now and the roster/minutes/stats were exactly the same, there would be a ton of #2 votes and some #1's. Right now fans just can't see anything as a positive, and to some extent I don't blame them. But it's way too early to make a definitive call on Yi.
