Did Jordan play in NBA under the no. 9?
I found the article in the hoopshype.com, that stated that he had played under this number for the Wizards..
Is it true?

Hoopshype = Whitney Houston on coke.

This is yet another example of why one should never use Hoopshype.

Michael didn't play with number 9 on the Wizards. He wore #23

(But if you ask me, that Wizards thing never happened. It's still just a myth ;))

EDIT: However, Michael did play with #9 on the '92 Dreamteam.

yeah, I knew about NT, and I think they didn't mean to play under this # for the whole period, but for a couple of games...

THE NEW YORK TIMES

January 1, 2002

PRO BASKETBALL; Jordan (45 Points) and Wizards Rout Nets

By LIZ ROBBINS

Michael Jor dan kept the clock and the Nets -- spinning around him tonight, suspended in his own magical time. In a stunning span of 5 minutes 50 seconds bridging the second and third quarters, Jordan made nine field goals and four free throws to score 22 straight points for Washington, taking over the game in vintage fashion.

Only two nights after Jordan scored 51 points against Charlotte here in the MCI Center, Jordan defied his 38 years and dominated again

He finished with 45 points, shooting 16 of 32 from the field, with 10 rebounds and 7 assists, in a jaw-dropping performance that led the Wizards to a 98-76 victory over the Nets.

The Nets (19-10), the Eastern Conference leaders, were were helpless on the boards, outrebounded by 62-30 as four Wizards including Jordan had 10 or more rebounds.

But Jordan was the reason the Nets left shaking their heads.

''No question about it, he's still good,'' the Nets' Kerry Kittles said.

Keith Van Horn and Martin led the Nets with 16 points apiece.

Van Horn said: ''You have the tendency when the guy is hot as Michael Jordan, you tend to ball watch and you don't get to your man and box out. We still have the responsibility to do that.''

From 1:55 in the second quarter to the 8:05 mark in the third quarter, Jordan went on a 22-7 personal run against the Nets. He fell 1 point short of his record 23 straight on April 16, 1987, for the Bulls against Atlanta. (He finished with 61 points in that game.)

Jordan, taken out with 2:52 remaining in the game, started his streak with a head fake that got Keith Van Horn to jump high and foul him on his drive to the basket.. At that point, Kenyon Martin went to the bench with back spasms and Jordan converted the free throw to bring the Wizards to 38-37. He finished the first half with 10 straight points, giving the Wizards a 44-41 lead they never relinquished.

Jordan then scored the Wizards' first 12 points of the second half, while the Nets managed 2. On his last basket, Jordan went up and under Martin, slithering to the basket to give the Wizards a 56-43 lead with 8:05 to play. Jordan scored 19 points in the third quarter.

The Nets feared a breakout by Jordan, considering his 51-point game on Saturday night. ''It's good and bad, he's gotten it out of the way,'' Jason Kidd said before tonight's game. ''But he's also capable of coming back and doing it again.''

While with the Bulls, Jordan averaged 31 points in 50 regular season games and held a 22-game winning streak over the Nets on his home court.

Martin, the Nets' second-year forward, came out with tenacity against Jordan, forcing him to alter his shots and twice swatting the ball out of his hand.

With Martin in the game in the first half, Jordan shot 3 for 8. When Martin went to the bench, Jordan shot 6 for 8.

Coach Byron Scott gave Martin and the rest of the starters a breather with less than two minutes left in the first quarter, and the Nets let a 9-point lead slip to 2 before Scott brought the starters back in.

The second time Martin left the game, he was in pain. There was 1:55 to play in the second quarter when Martin went to the bench, doubled over and grimaced as Jordan went to the foul line. Martin wore a back support when he returned in the second half.

Jordan exploded for 14 of his 23 first-half points in the second quarter; he scored 19 of his 21 second-half points in the third quarter. No one but Martin could stop him.

In Jordan's last game against the Charlotte Hornets, he set a team record with 24 points in the first quarter and 34 in the first half.

''I was pretty sure everybody after the 6-point game was contemplating if I was old, if I could score big numbers again,'' Jordan said of his point total last Thursday in a loss to Indiana. ''I always thought that if I got in a good rhythm, I could score big numbers.''

Kidd said: ''We all knew that with him making a comeback that at some point he would be showing flashes of what he has done in the past. Being in shape is one point, but having your legs in basketball shape is a totally different thing. And he's gotten his legs back.''

Jordan said that the Wizards' future rests mostly guard Richard Hamilton, who emerged during their nine-game winning streak. Jordan said he was happy to take a back seat to Hamilton, who is on the injured list with a pulled groin and may not be back for another 10 days.

''Michael Jordan is not the Wizards' future; he's more right now,'' Jordan said. ''I think if he can do anything, it's to pass on the positive and the education about the game of basketball.''

Tonight, he taught the Nets a powerful lesson.
