Don't fire Avery... yet.
Let him coach the next 9 games, which almost always would result in a loss by virtue of him just coaching, then fire him.
I don't know for you but I really don't think we're going to win the title nor have a deep playoff run this year, so I'm praying for the lottery. We get a nice young prospect, follow it up with an aggressive off-season, a good training camp, then let's judge from there if this trade was indeed a travesty.

You guys are overreacting on Avery. AND, you guys would have never made it to the finals a couple years back without Avery. Look back and reflect at what he's done so far in just 3 years. One bad year, so what? Every team has it, and you guys are still going to win 50 games which I don't know why it isn't enough for yall.

Why does everyone say "one bad year?" It has been 2 consecutive post season meltdowns and possibly not even making the playoffs this year!
And is 50 games not good enough? Absolutley not! Championship or bust! But then again, what can you expect from a Houstan fan?

Besides, with the talant we have, we should be top 4....with the talant we had 2 months ago, we should be top of the West. The fact that he is too buddy-buddy with Stackhouse & Terry is kinda like that boss who would not fire an incompetant worker because they go out on the weekends.
Avery has lost this team as a leader!

agreed avery got outcoached the last two years and just sucks this year, lets hire kenny smith as gm and roy williams as coach, not the horrid safety on the cowboys, the unc coach, maybe after they win another title this year he'll want a shot at the nba.

False.
We got to the Finals because Dirk was playing like an absolute madman. It's not a coincidence that when he had a poor series against Miami, we lost. Same story with Golden State.
Besides, if you think a coach who a) runs isolations despite having an elite playmaker and some of the best scorers in the league at his disposal, b) assigns the worst defender/s on the team to guard single coverage a hot player, and c) try to change players into something they're not and freaking out when they predictably fail -- ad-finitum, ad-nauseum without learning from his mistakes at all -- is a good coach, then yeah, you're right, he is a good coach.

Mark will stick with Avery for one more year. Then, if the Mavs don't win a title in 09, and since Kidd's contract is up next year, he will dump Avery and Kidd together and start over again for 2010.
I'd like Mark to start now myself. Fire Avery, trade Terry, Damp, Bass and Stack for a point guard if you can find one, and go with Josh and Dirk as your only remaining starting players next season with an all new lineup surrounding them.
This team is slowly eroding. Better to get what you can for it now (high first rounders) before the rest of the league see's the same thing.

I remember Miami Heat firing Stan van Gundy when they struggled and Riley taking over and leading them to the title.
Not saying we *should* fire Avery, but there were instances when a coach exchange did wonders for whatever reasons. And looking back i dont think Riley really forced new plays and tactics for the team, he prob just let them play their best individually and called plays rarely. I would want such a coach that is laid back and lets players take over.

Last nights game was one of the most depressing losses for me watching the Mavs since the Finals disaster. When a team with 3 could-be-allstars and solid role players at each position goes 0-9 against teams with a .500 record than its the coaches fault. The Mavs need to fire him, but im hoping they make the lottery after last night.

Speaking of Krzyzewski: do you think money would be able to entice him? I remember him turning down the Lakers a few years back during their "let's sign gimmick replacements!" phase after Phil left.
He's one of those rare coaches that are flexible and have no ego and would defer to a point guard (such as Kidd) for decisions if needed.

I wouldnt bet on Coach K leaving his job at Duke for the Mavs. Everyone has a pricetag though, I mean, im sure for enough money, he would coach the Memphis Grizzlies.

I agree completely, especially the bolded part.
I like how other people come here to talk about regular season winnings under Avery, but then the past two years when we failed in a big way in the playoffs, everyone came here to talk about the regular season meaning nothing and the Mavs being postseason jokes.
We made the finals b/c
1. Dirk was a beast up until then
2. Terry was actually a clutch shooter and a more consistent scorer (these days, he is a small shadow of that)
3. Josh wasn't as much of a jumpshooter, but a better defender and slasher
4. The West was much easier...there is no more weak Memphis team to face in the first round

IIRC, the Lakers offered him 40 Million at 4-5 years.. and he turned it down. So, I am not sure what his price would be.
Cheers.

I actually think Avery was integral in helping us reach the Finals. Just because he's hurting us now doesn't mean he didn't help us in the past. I just think he was the catalyst that propelled us forward that year. We needed him to take over at the time.
Of course, that shouldn't matter a bit right now, IMO. If he's hurting more than helping, get rid of him. Or keep him and give him the kind of team he wants. Just pick one and go with it.
I went back and looked at each game in the Spurs series. Dirk was pretty good in all but Game 1...very consistent. In our losses, nobody other than Dirk stepped up and had a really high PPS. In games we won, at least one other player stepped up and scored a lot of points on fairly few shots (sometimes a couple of players did). To me, that speaks volumes about the lack of consistency among Dirk's cohorts.
