Inconsistency of language by commentators

Post#1 » by T-Mac for MVP » Fri Mar 28, 2008 6:59 pm

"Team A by 5" - are they in the lead by 5 or do they trail by 5?

"Player A draws the foul" - did player A give the foul or did he force (what I would call "draw") a foul ?

"Team A by 5" means the team is leading by 5, and if a player draws a foul, they got fouled..

I don't think I've heard either any other way.

Good point.

I believe it means that Player A got fouled.

I thought this was going to be about Walt Frazier's verbose verbage and versatile vernacular.

the lack of fact-checking irks me more

for the hornets vs. boston last week, we had 18,280, "the largest crowd to attend a new orleans hornets game in the new orleans arena" according to bob and gil.

ummm no

this was when we were 17-54: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/recap?gameId=250402003

this was the lakers' first game here in 2003: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/recap?gameId=230115003

game 6 of the sixers' playoff series:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/recap?gameId=230502003

the lakers' visit here in november '03:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/recap?gameId=231107003

this was after the hurricane so they can't use that qualifier

check your facts people

Maybe 18,280 was the actual number of fans in attendance and those boxscores are just the number of tickets sold?
