OT: Special Olympics - Sam Mitchell Sighting

I volunteered at a Special Olympics event at U of T today, and Sam Mitchell came to the event and I got to talk to him!

Sam Mitchell is really nice and down-to-earth in person.
His wife and daughters were there, a great time was had by all!

This may be a long-shot, but did anyone else go to/hear about the event?

Wasn't he teaching kids from the ages of 6-12 basketball basics today? It was supposed to be from 2-3pm and it was open to the kids of the players at the Bay Street Hoops Tournament.
I heard about THAT, but I didn't wanna stick around to see it after my team got eliminated.

Yeah, that was it. He came around, signed autographs, gave some pointers here and there and met with all of the kids after the session.

Some of my friends started chirping him, they were like, "Glad to see Bargnani's playing well...You better not get 5th or 7th seed, or you're going to get swept in the first round." Then I told Smitch that they were Heat fans, and he laughed. That's when I got my autograph!

Maybe changing the thread title would be appropriate (it wasn't Special Olympics, it was Bay Street Hoops... although one can be forgiven for mistaking the two :p)

If this was a Special O function, good on Sam. My wife coached SO for a number of years and I helped a touch. It is one of the truly worthwhile things to do in life.

To the a-holes making fun of it, go to hell and die.

EDIT: not the a-holes specifically in this thread, but to all the people who make the "arguing on the internet..." jokes etc.

You may think Sam is not a good coach. Fine. But he is a good human being. I have always respected him for the type of person he is. It is sad that some people take every chance to take personal shots at people. If people do good things that is great. Vince Carter did things in the community you may hate his guts but fact remains he did good things. I just think some sports fans fail to remember that there are far more important things that go beyond sports and actions taken by good people like the person that started this thread and Sam should be respected regardless.

I recall reading somewhere that Sam's degree was in special needs education, and that he's taken a strong interest in things like SO everywhere he's played and coached.

Yeah, Sam talked about coaching a SO team in college and working with the SO in Minnesota (when he played there).
