He is kinda frustrating sometimes...
When it comes to letting the team learn from their own mistakes it kinda pisses me off, like last night... There is no way we should have shot 44 threes against that weak Memphis zone... no way... But if Phil were to be asked about it he would probably respond the same way he does when they ask him why he doesnt like to take timeouts when we go into slumps
"There are times in the playoffs when you have to be conservative with your timeouts; if they learn from their mistakes now, it could benefit us down the line."
If I were him I would also get on Kobe and the rest of them about barking at the refs, waving their arms on no calls, staring down the refs etc.... Not only is it annoying to watch, it may cost us from getting benefit of the doubt type calls in the playoffs

I like PJ's coaching style. Reading his book the "last season", his style is to let the players play it out and learn for themselves and i agree with it. Words from a coach can just be words from a coach, but i feel that deep down if a player wants to win then he will find it within themselves. Yes occasionally it would be great if the Zen master would call a timeout or two when the Lakers aren't clicking, just so that he can give them time to focus. But in reality things will change once the playoffs come along, PJ will take more of vocal once the REAL games start. He just feels that the regular season is all about the players learning from others and building their chemistry. PJ has a funny way of teaching, but in some cases it works out because he knows when to chime in and let his team know that they are playing good and when they are not. All his mind tricks pay off but he has toned them down just so that they are still effective. So far I am glad that we have PJ as a coach he has definitely kept this team together in terms of kobes comments earlier in the season. He kept them all focused and not distracted by the demands, and it all eventually pay off. It all should be real nice the next two years that we have him, does anyone agree with back to back championships?

A coaching staff of Red, Phil, Pat, and Chuck Daley couldn't get the best out of those guys.

The only things that bother me about phil are his substitution patterns and his reluctance to make DEFENSE the teams top priority. I can live with the substitution patterns as every coach generally F's up in that department but I can't live with him not making Defense the team's main focus, especially with one of the best offensive players of all time.

Let me give you an example of what Phil brings ....
Many are caught up in 2 things...
1) timeouts
2 roatations
It would seem at times makes us all wonder what he is doing???, but the fact of the matter...he is doing something. Phil is a true "art of war" type coach and he uses tactics as simple and subtle as letting a team lose a game to help them understand what needs to be done for the ultimate prize.
Yes, he has/ had superstars and its easy to look at that and say.. hey, he is supposed to win..
Not really the case... take a look at some of his runs... There were Bulls games where Kerr and Paxson ....then on the Lakers ..Fisher/horry taking the last shot for the win.. and laker games where we have been down and out -- yet champion teams came back and beat teams like the Blazers, Kings.... and in CHI UTA and PHX.....when at the time they should have lost.
These rotations he plays with --- could possibly make teams where you are are like.. Kerr FTW? Paxson FTW? Fisher, Horry FTW... and it doesnt make sense to most... but he is playing guys , even when they struggle so that when it comes down to the game winner... they will give their best shot when we need it most..
[confidence at its finest ]
And when we are down 15 in the 4th quarter of Game 7 against a very good Blazers team in te WCF.... it took us not getting coach stroked and rah rah speeches that they can do it. They have already been taught over the season they dont need PJ to call timeouts to win the game....the need to dig it out on their own, liked adults and pros.
So, Phil , frustrates us alot in his coaching....but he does it for a reason. This reason might not seem 'normal' to us.. based on what other coaches do..... but Phil is preparaing them for those moments when you have an opportunity to win it all..... I cant judge against him at this point because he has delivered in the past and he is trying to continue his greatness...... that when we will all be loved and admired when he gets 10...not changing a thing in his approach

I think he did get the best of them. have you seen their averages from before they came here and after they left?dub81 wrote:He gets the best out of every player. Except Smush and Kwame.
