Walsh only has a handshake agreement with the Knicks with the sticking points being full autonomy over roster decisions and a change in their media policy.

One would believe that full autonomy with the Bucks would be a tough sell to Herb, but perhaps he would cede control.

Throw in the Larry Brown rumor and it may appear that Herb is at least thinking in the right direction.

Whether anything comes of it, we'll see.

If Walsh falls through perhaps Kohl could send a boatload of money to Jerry Wests home and then try to nab Larry Brown.

That would be what you call going big.

Knicks wobbly on Donnie Walsh

Donnie Walsh is waiting to see if he will be granted full autonomy over every basketball-related issue if he joins the Knicks.

There are rumblings that James Dolan will hold a press conference this week to announce his plans to refurbish Madison Square Garden. The announcement of rebuilding the Knicks may have to wait a few more days.

Donnie Walsh has a handshake agreement to succeed Isiah Thomas as Knicks' president, but Walsh is still in talks with Dolan, the Garden chairman, about receiving assurances that he will have autonomy over every basketball-related issue, including the team's infamous media policy.

A source familiar with the talks believes that if Walsh signs a deal with the Knicks, it will happen this week. From all indications, Walsh will join the Knicks, but in the unlikely event that he passes on the job, Walsh has two other plausible options: sitting out one season or running the Milwaukee Bucks.

With Doug Collins reportedly having twice turned down the Bucks, the team is actively trying to recruit Walsh. In fact, a Bucks source claims that team owner Herb Kohl is trying to reunite Walsh and Larry Brown in Milwaukee.

Walsh, of course, would have the final say on who coaches his team and there is no guarantee that Brown, whom he once hired in Indiana, would be his first choice. But Kohl has broached the idea, according to a source.

If Jerry West becomes our next GM, you face the possibilty of Bogut landing with the Lakers in two or three years. West, a lifetime Laker, would make that happen. Can you say Pau Gasol?

Not a chance. The Knicks are not brining in Donnie Walsh to have a limited role.

I've spoken to two people so far who Donnie Walsh has spoken to directly on this issue. He will not have a "limited role"

Part of the delay in his officially accepting the position was that he wanted to make sure he was not expected to have a "limited role"
He wasn't and he won't.

He'll have a number two guy that he will task with doing some of the grunt work, some of the mundane tasks, that he doesn't think he needs to do himself. This is not uncommon at all for an NBA executive of his stature.
The exact title that #2 guy will have is yet to be determined.

Walsh will be the one running the show, and he will not have a limited role.

Not in the traditional sense, no. Unfortunately the number of traditional front office people we keep employed keeps shrinking. We used to have a GM, Assistant GM, Director of Player Personnel, and Assistant DPP, on top of all the NBA, college, and international scouts. Right now we only have one of those top 4 spots (Dave Babcock at DPP and currently interim GM) and we have no college scouts. So we're even more bare than usual, but that has been the trend unfortunately since 2002.

As for multiple people heading the front office, we don't need to hire people to have that be the case.
We have Herb Kohl, Ron Walter, John Steinmiller, Mike Burr, and whoever we give the GM title to.

True.

But spending money on a quality front office is a good investment.

A much better investment than having Ron Walter on the payroll. At least Steinmiller is a capable Business Operations guy and Burr is (well, I'm assuming) a capable CFO. The point is they both have actual jobs here that someone would need to do. Not so with Ron Walter.

And a much better investment than spending money on fringe players like Voskuhl, Storey, Greer, Reiner, McCray, Jermaine Jackson, Josh Davis, Zendon Hamilton, Anthony Goldwire, and Dan Langhi.

I can't imagine Kohl tolerating Brown's parking lot new conferences, ala Brown's NY chaos.

I agree with you there on Larry Brown.
I've never really been in favor of his being brought here.

However, with this latest rumor, I have reached the point of being willing to roll the dice on Larry Brown as opposed to just continuing to do what we've been doing lately.

But I too doubt that bringing Larry Brown in here would end up working out well.
