Especially if you want any kind of shot on the big time free agents in 2010 . None of the guys is coming to a losing situation they want to have success .

This team's not going to be blown up completely .

We will most likely hang around 5-10th place in the east while we get younger and try to clear some cap space . This team need a new franchise player and trying to tank to get one somewhere is a HUGE risk and means a lot of lost money. That would just be stupid with the team on the move.

The funny thing is almost every fan of a team they're not 100% satisfied with believes he has one of the worst coaches in the league .

In reality Frank's not much worse then most coaches in the league just another mediocre guy not good but by far not the worst.

Sorry sir but Isiah aside Frank is the worst coach in the NBA....
Anyway it bugs me that the team is losing money because it can make so damn much if they just move to Newark, at least for now.

With the hole on big positions and the lack off bench in general there's no reason to believe any coach would have made this team much better.

We've lost some games with Kidd we would have won if he played right this season and probably made the playoffs but this team's still missing a bench and consistent scoring bigs .

Of course Franks not a great coach but so are Larry K. , Sam Mitchell , Mike Woodson , Marc Iavaroni and several others . If these guys were here you would say the same things you say now about Frank but the reality is this team is not that good .

To fire Frank doesn't make the team much ,if any , better it just costs money . We're in a transition phase right now there's no need to spend even more money for a lateral move .

If a piece is available that the Nets believe could significantly help them. Then I think they'll use the MLE to sign him they did so when they gambled on Magloire, it didn't work out but I think Ratner is willing to spend to a certain extent.

I'm pretty sure he's adamantly against the Nets dipping into the luxury tax though, I also wonder how he feels about acquiring another big name player with a big contract.

I've been meaning to create a seperate thread on this but with the pieces the Nets have they can now make legitimate trades for big men such as Jermaine O'Neal and Elton Brand in which both THEY and the other team get what they want.

Then how exactly do you plan to get a franchise player? There are only two ways to do it. 1. By the draft lottery 2. Through free agency.

If you look at the franchise-caliber players that are in their primes, it's not a coincidence that most if not all of them were top 5 picks. Trying to "tread water" and stay competitive will accomplish nothing except for maybe a couple of first round beat downs in the next couple of seasons.

It is impossible to get the legitimate cap room needed to sign a superstar when Carter/Jefferson/Harris combine to make the following amounts over the next three seasons:
2008/09: $35.7 million
2009/10: $38.7 million
2010/11: $41.7 million

If you ever want to be in a position for cap space, Carter or Jefferson needs to go. The fact that it improves the team's chances of possibly striking gold in the lottery is an added bonus.

Is going into the lottery a guarantee that you'll land a franchise player? Of course not. However, what other options do the Nets have?

You're right that the Nets need a franchise player, but it's probably not possible unless you deal Carter or Jefferson for financial flexibility/picks.

I don't think you need a total demolition job, but I think Carter needs to go. I'm not anti-Vince, but quite frankly a 31-year-old shooting guard making $16 mil over the next 3 seasons does not fit with a rebuilding team.

If you cut the cord with Vince now, you can enter the 2010 market with a core of Jefferson, Harris, 5 draft picks over the next 3 seasons (with 2-3 likely being top 10 selections), Boone, S. Will and maybe Krstic. Is that a title contender? Probably not, though possible if you draft well. If you add in a big time free agent (and I'm not even talking a LeBron/Wade level guy) and you have a legit contender.

One more thing I had to respond to was the idea that free agents won't go to losing teams.

You talk about free agents not wanting to sign with losing teams. While, they won't sign with dead end teams, since there are few teams with cap room in a given summer, they will sign with teams that are not contenders yet.

Look at the big free agent signings the last few years. Arenas, Nash, Boozer, Mehmet Okur, Rashard Lewis, Peja, Joe Johnson, Lamar Odom, Andre Miller, Kenyon Martin, Larry Hughes and Ben Wallace weren't exactly going to title contenders. Of that group only Johnson and Wallace signed with a team that had made the playoffs the previous season.

And most are now overpaid, getting franchise player money without being franchise players, minus a few exceptions. Established franchise players don't get let go for nothing.

By its defintion franchise players have good value, so they are not allowed to just walk. The team will look out for its own interests and keep them or get good value (which fits their needs) back for them in trade or sign & trade.

If we save up the right trade pieces, in the form of young talent, expirings and pick, we might be be contenders to get a franchise player in trade. But they would want to come here too. Teams are reluctant to take expensive players who don't want to be there or gain a reputation of sending players where they don't want to go.

Two things:
1. Having cap room still makes it easier to get said player in a trade (expirings are nice, but not have to pay money for dead weight expirings is better).

2. Yes, we've seen franchise players get traded, but most get dealt when they are on the wrong side of 30.

A lot of free agents are "overpaid" and in an ideal world a free agent is more of a last piece to the puzzle. The more likely way to get a franchise player is via the draft. Of course, stripping the roster enough to have future cap room will increase their chances of getting that franchise player in the draft.
